For Jade
Fire. Burning everywhere. Heat so intense it hurt to think about. That same deep monotonous laugh. The voices, tortured souls whispering, always whispering. "Come", they said, "Come with us, all your pain will go away, forever". It was all she could do to resist. So tempting, the sweetness under lieing the hatred, that burning hatred. It burned so bright and hot. Everywhere was sadness, anger, suffering and dispare. She rammed her fist into her mouth to prevent the cry that had been forming deep within her. That would only encourage them. She had to be brave, so, so brave. Picture herself falling once more. The voices died to murmurs, barly audible. Keep picturing it. Keep going. Don't stop. Suddenly she could help it no longer, a single tear rolled down her cheek. It dropped off her chin signalling an explosion in her tear ducts. She cried out, sobbing. They converged, murmurs becoming shouts. Teeth bit down upon her flesh. Claws raked her skin. Knarled fingers knotted in her hair, yanking from side to side.
Sophie, the girl who once fell, awoke.
