Butterfly Child

A flutter of graceful wings, like the petals of a mysterious rose,
Antennae gently swishing, a delicate grass-like pose,
Emerald green, peacock blue, velvet red,
The enchanting creature danced above her head,
Nestling in the child's field of hair,
Then suddenly startled from its lair,
It drifted to a curtain of tasteful lace,
Just as the tiny toddler gave chase,
Plump fingers wriggling like a dozen snakes,
She leapt after its beauty without further haste,
Jumping and leaping, with a hop and a skip,
The child lurched across the kitchen without a slip,
Crouching behind chairs,
In the abyss beneath a table,
Thirsty for its wonder the child suddenly became able,
The creature, unaware, of her presence there,
Folded its wings, closing its book,
Just as the toddler peered up to look,
Disturbed once again the creature took flight,
Startled by the toddler it fluttered toward the light,
Soaring high, this butterfly,
Drifted through a window that was ajar,
Free in the crisp air it fluttered far,
Away from the reach of pesky, plump toddlers fingers it never glanced back...
