The Philosophy of "Fuck It"

Fuck It- one of the most liberating phrases in the English language. But I grew up a chronic Worrier, unable to harness the advantages of not giving a shit. Ever notice how Worriers always have really bad luck? And seem to be more accident prone and get sick more often? I know why that is. Because it all happened to me.

I used to play a racing game called Driver on the Playstation, where you could rally around San Francisco to your heart's content. One thing really pissed me off though- every time I would come drifting flat-out around a street corner, I would be yelling at the TV, "Don't hit that tree... Don't hit that fucking tree!!" And guess what? I always hit the fucking tree. The reason is because of an annoying idiosyncrasy with the human brain- if you concentrate hard enough on something, your subconscious will draw you towards it. Whatever it is, or whatever you think about it, doesn't matter. All my subconscious heard was "tree, tree, tree..." What I should've said was "stay on the road." This is the basis of Positive Thinking, and it can change your life.

Try this- next time some annoying bastard doesn't hold a self-closing door open because you're slightly too far behind them, say to yourself "don't close, don't close, don't close..." Chances are, you won't make it. Your subconscious will sabotage you without you even knowing it. If however you say something like "stay open, stay open," you'll almost always get through. Fact.

And that's the reason why Worriers have bad luck, are accident prone and get sick more often- they worry so much about the things they don't want to happen. Their conscious mind is such a flurry of anxiety that they can't hear their subconscious working away in the background, drawing them toward the very tree they're trying to avoid.

All it takes is to realise that it's all in your head, and that you have the power to change the way you think about all the shit that's happening to you.
Glenn Turner said "worrying is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but gets you nowhere."
So what's the point? Exactly- there isn't one. Fuck It. With the people in your life, those who matter won't mind, and those who mind don't matter. With the situations you're faced with- what's the worst that can happen? If it's not going to kill you, it's going to strengthen your character. Accept the worst, then realise that it's probably not going to happen, and move on.

If you have trouble moving on, like I did, the answer is also profoundly simple- keep your mind engaged in something you enjoy, and it won't have time to worry. Simples.
Once the good habits replace the bad, all it takes is a single "Fuck It" to dispel any niggling worries, doubts or dilemmas before they have a chance to fester. Then you can start actually living your life, instead of just worrying about it.

Whoops! This is so great to hear. I myself am something of a chronic worrier, reading text like this reminds me to come out positive instead of dwelling on the negative. Thanks for this!
