I sat myself down in Algebra, the day after Valentine's Day, my heart still hurting, but my eyes dry.
The girl that sits next to me turned and smiled.
"Hey," I smiled back. "Did Aaron do anything for Valentine's?"
Her smile grew bigger. "He bought me roses. And a necklace. And--"
The list went on, and I shook my head. This girl was the grade below me and it sounded like she had the best boyfriend ever.
"Roses are no small investment," I said, laughing. "They're super expensive. He's the best."
"He is," she said softly, her pretty brown eyes staring into space, lips curled in a stupid smile.
Then, she shook herself out of her euphoria. "So, what about Paul?" she waggled her eyebrows, smirking. "Did he ask you to be his Valentine?"
She knew about Paul because she'd seen us walking together. She told us we looked unbelievably cute and asked if he was more than a friend. I explained my situation, and she shook her head.
"That's bound to change," she'd said, smiling.
Now, I looked at her, taking a deep breath."Uh, not exactly."
"Hmm?" she asked, blinking.
"He...well...last night he told me he wasn't ready for a relationship," I said.
I summarized our conversation, putting on a deep, masculine voice, mimicking Paul. She chuckled, and rolled her eyes.
"Oh, Emily," she said, folding her arms. "You just wait. The moment he sees you in the arms of another guy, he'll be sooo jealous. He'll be crawling."
I shook my head, smiling sadly at her. "No, I don't think so."
"No, honestly," she said eagerly. "Someday he's going to realize that he missed out on an amazing girl...and then he'll be like--" she put on a masculine voice, too, and I giggled. "--'Oh my gosh, Emily, I've loved you ever since we became friends, and I still do, you're the only one for me!' And if you still love him, then you guys can live happily ever after."
"I wish," I said softly, staring at the floor.
"It's going to happen," she said, like she was one hundred percent sure. "And if it doesn't...then he's an idiot. Simple as that."
I laughed out loud, and she grinned confidently at me.
"I'm serious," she said. "Just wait and see it happen."
I turned back to my math problems, a warm feeling spreading throughout my heart. Yes, it's broken...
But sometimes, all you need are some friends to make you forget about it for a little bit.

Writing is my life. Forever. I want to be an author when I grow up. I write all the time. When I'm happy, sad, angry...it's an escape. Oh, and I love green hearts. I absolutely love them.
