Several attempts were rumored to have been made in those first two years. Everything from the issuing of a global currency, of which I never did see, in order to re-establish a monetary foundation and create a market... to far sinister ideas, to include forced labor camps on a massive scale. None of these plans worked, for whatever reasons. Society was too far gone. Any perceived progress from any remaining government official, regardless of probability of success, was quickly combated by another. Political assassinations became common. I remember hearing of them from time to time. Then there was silence. No more public announcements, or press releases. No new leadership figure screaming his thoughts and ideas for a new tomorrow. The roaring humming produced by those diesel engines as they patrolled what was left of communities, could no longer be heard. There was no longer restraints held on the most dangerous of people. Those we came to forget about. They had no more reason to tip toe through the night or hide in the day. Those engines we came to, both, fear and depend upon were no where to be found. To those families left, that managed survival to this point, the silence was deafening.
