He glared down at her, then the expression on his face became distant and he blinked rapidly. He dropped her arm suddenly, shaking his head. 'I...I...I don't know what came over me.' he muttered apologetically, walking slowly back to a shocked looking Cathy. Her mouth was a perfect pink O shape. I glared at her, 'I think you should leave.' Adams mum snarled. I strode to the front door, 'I'm not giving up.' I spat at her as she slammed the door behind me. Lucy looked pointedly at me, 'what happened?' she asked eagerly. I relayed the conversation back to her, 'she was about to hit me and he grabbed her.' I finished, 'Abby that's great, he remembered you for that split second. That means that he should remember.' she said excitedly. 'mmm' I mumbled. We walked down the long gravel drive, in my head I was mentally thinking of what I was going to say to Cathy tomorrow.
Amelie howled for the whole night, my mum helped me quieten her but even with her help I only got about an hours sleep, when I woke up and dragged myself into the bathroom and saw my reflection I was greeted by dark bags, squinty eyes and wild hair. I tried to make myself look half decent for my encounter with Cathy, but even with all my efforts, it was clearly obvious I had, had little to no sleep.
I left Amelie in the capable hands of my mother, while I began making my way to Adams house.
I avoided the front door, knowing after yesterday his mum would not let me step a foot inside the house. Instead I snuck through the back garden gate, where I assumed they would be sitting on the bench like yesterday. I peered round the hedge, and sure enough they were sat closely together, huddled. Even though it broke my heart, I had to block it out if I was going to confront her. I waited until Adam went inside and then strode up to her. 'oh hi.' she said perkily. 'why?' I said, suddenly my anger evaporated and instead I felt exhausted. Her brow crinkled as she thought about what I said. 'what do you mean?' she said sweetly, 'why, if you know that Adam is married to me, would you come and act like I don't exist.' I sighed. 'what! You and Adam split up.' she said, 'I'm not doing anything wrong.' she said defensively. What did you say?' I said, 'Adam and I didn't split up, we are married, we have a baby.' I said confused. 'oh my.' she said her hands flying to her mouth, 'I didn't know. Adams mum said...' I cut her off with my hand, 'she's a liar, she hates me, when Adam and I were engaged she wouldn't stop trying to convince adam to marry you and not me.' I sighed, feeling bad for thinking so badly of her. She was just caught up in a web of lies that Adams mum had cleverly spun. 'I'm sorry Cathy, we are still together, he lost his memory in an accident and it seems his mum has used that to try to break me and him up.' I said, my shoulders slumping at the complexity of it all. 'no I'm sorry Abby, I should have known. I...I have to go...' she mumbled her eyes filling with tears, as she stumbled towards the gate.
