I remember when I was falling half in love. He wore his hair long.
We mouthed the words to the same Goo Goo Dolls song.
(The other halfway took a little more time;
He closed the gap when his lips closed over mine.)
Those days before "us", it was just "him" and "me",
And the assumption that was how it always would be.
I was resigned to the fact that I'd never have a chance
To be more than friends with this remarkable man,
Who told tales tall and short in a voice like chocolate and smoke,
And in all situations never lacked for a joke.
I caught him watching me sometimes, those sparkling dark eyes
Full of thoughts that I couldn't surmise.
It was just over a year before the barrier between us,
Made from convention and duty, crumbled to dust.
Since that moment I've belonged, body and soul,
To that sparkling-eyed man, who made my heart whole.
