You thought you knew where you were headed.
You thought you'd end up there alone.
You thought you'd remain solitary
And that your own heart would be your home.
I assumed all I'd get would be compromise.
I assumed "the one" didn't exist.
I assumed that I'd never feel butterflies,
That I'd settle, or else loneliness risk.
But your course was changed mid-journey.
My own plans all backfired.
Our paths were forcibly diverted:
The Universe conspired.
I was crushed, believed I'd failed;
You believed the same.
We didn't realise we'd been press ganged
Into an entirely different game.
At last our altered paths met,
The day when we shook hands.
We didn't know yet that this was the reason
For the destruction of our plans.
Just under a year passed.
Friends we had become.
But there was a constant undercurrent of something more:
Our new path had already begun.
Endless coincidences
And unexpected turns and twists
Led us to that New Year's Day
When, at last, we kissed.
The stars all realigned once more
And breathed a relieved sigh.
Things were finally as they should be:
We were together, you and I.
Now we're forever in incredulous joy
Of this magic that so transpired.
No one has ever been so glad
That the Universe conspired.
