Chapter 17
"I'm sorry." I say frantically "I reach for his hand and clasp it tightly in mine. "I just couldn't bare it if you died, and it was my fault. If I just watched you.-"
"It's ok." he say's calmly. He eyes replaced with sympathy rather than the look of panick. He smiles, I can tell he is still terrified, but he holds it back for me. His biggest fear since he was a child was helplessness, and that was everything to describe the position we're in now. "As long as I'm here with you I'll always be ok." I smile, although I feel like I'm trapped in the middle of a corny movie so I chuckle a little. He puts his hands under my chin and lifts it up to where our lips meet. He looks into my eyes for about a minute, as we drop another inch. He kisses me gently and backs away. "Well speak up, I know you didn't just drop down here you must have a plan."
This question hits me like a rock. There was a sudden change of mood from sweet to stern. "Right." I nod and begin to say the first thing that pops into mind. "Well you say we can do anything when we're together. So how bout trying that for a first try?"
He frowns. "Two flaws. When I said everything I meant we can do almost anything only when we reach our full strenghth. He looks up and continues his sentence "And by the looks of it, our first try may be our last."
I look up. I am not sure how but we are now about 15 feet under the surface from the looks of it. "Ok well let's make sure our first try our last, and succeed of course." I say and look around the hole. "Is there anything at all to work with?" I say looking around, but I interrupt before he could say anything, besides I know what the answer would be anyways, dirt. "The roots." I say and smile confidently "there has to be some somewhere." So I start to think really hard, so hard i can almost sence where the roots are and I pull. I pull stretch and grow they somehow someway that I still have no idea how. They come close but stop about an inch from where the wall of dirt ends.
Remembering about Flint, I grab his arm and think again. They stick through the walls with ease and gather up to the surface. Flint grabs me by my waist and hoists me up with ease.
Soon we both reach the surface and smile. Jackie looks stunned that we made it out, I think. Or was it that she was more stunned of what was behind us?
