Don't break the glass.
The creepy old lady at the front desk kept reiterating the same cryptic sentence as I asked about the room for rent. Finally, I am able to retrieve the brass key from her gnarled fingers. I trudge up the rotting stairs. Creepy hag. The room is the only dark door at the end if the hall. At least I know which room is mine. I stare at the door for a few minutes and finally unlock the door. The door swings open so quickly, I realize the floor under it is beginning to wear down. I sigh and plod into my new apartment. The room's windows are shielded with thick drapes that don't allow much light to creep into the room. My hands grope the wall as I search the the-ah-light switch. Light engulfs the room. The apartment is bigger than the picture depicted and, if in another location, could pass as a high class condo. I set my bags by the furniture covered in pristine white sheets. Fully furnished and updated? Hag must really want tenants. Time to explore I suppose. My pockets relinquish my twisted headphones and I turn my iPod on. The rooms adjacent to the first are the kitchen, the bedroom, and the decently sized bathroom. The same wood flooring is in my room. Full slabs of black marble, however, greet me in the kitchen and bathroom. Definitely wanting some tenants all right. The guitar that was blaring in my ears hits its last note and silence fills my ears. A sob comes from the front room. The next song starts up. Wait. What? I hit pause just as another sob sounds. A little creeped out, I walk slowly to the front room. Nobody. I scan the room twice more. Sob. My heart flips and I spin towards the door. Oh sweet mother of--! I fall backwards and hit the hard, polished wood floor. I grab my head and try to calculate what I just saw. A girl in the mirror. A girl....in the...mirror. In the...? I look back up and she's still there. Her hands are pressed against the slim mirror and she's staring right at me. I feel myself staring back. I feel myself drawn to her. I feel myself...connect with her. I stand and slowly walk over, hesitant about this beautiful girl who's already captivated my soul. I place my hands over hers and I feel that warmth of connection spreading through my body. She takes a breath. I lean in. Her petite mouth opens as her equally petite hands are placed back against mine. Her gaze is hopeful and like a magnet drawing me in.
She whispers.
Save me.
