Writing is easy. Sometimes. You just sit down and let the words drip out of your mouth onto the paper (or computer). Sometimes they flow fast. Other times they slop out slowly. Getting them out is easy though. Hitting that 5000 word mark on the essay is hardly rocket science. It's just making sense of them after that's hard. When you look down at the maze of words that surround you in no discernible order it's difficult. Like a jumble sale you know amidst the chaos is a coherent and well structured argument. It's just playing hide and seek and there are no clues to help. So you jump in and wade around in the words shifting them, beating them annihilating the surplus. Slowly. Ever so slowly it starts to take form. Out of the sand there is a faint shape starting to emerge. It's still ugly but at least you can tell it has a face. Word by word you polish it. Eventually it makes sense. Or perhaps its still nonsense but you've spent so long drowning in words that anything makes sense now.
