It was a moonlit night at the resort of cala d'or in Spain. The on site entertainment had just finished, and as everyone else sipped away the last drops of their sangria's and cocktails, before stumbling back to their hotel rooms, I took my camera from my pocket, and headed towards the beach.
As I explored earlier in the day, I noticed a small overhanging of rocks running alongside the beach, that carried on high above a small rocky cove, and right then I knew that I needed a picture of the moonlight glistening over the calm waters to show everyone back home.
I now made my way down the dark path, half pressing the shutter button of my camera to light my path for a few seconds at a time, before I reached the end, where I was shocked to see I wasn't alone.
Sat on the edge of the rocks, was a young girl. She looked around 20 years old, and skin as pale as snow. Her long blonde hair flowed down her back, floating just inches above the floor she sat on.
I too sat on the rocks, and we both sat there silently, listening to the gentle waves rolling around us.
I slowly built up courage, before the words 'it's a beautiful night isn't it' slipped from my mouth.
She softly whispered back with a smile, nodded in agreement, and said she did not want to ever leave this cove.
We sat in silence a little longer, before I told her my name. She looked back, and said her name was Jessica, and gave another little smile.
We talked for a little while, watching the moon move across the sky, and as the first signs of dawn appeared, I thought it best to head back to the room. I thanked her for her company, and gave a little kiss on her cheek, then offered to head back to the resort, but she said she'd stay a little longer. I agreed, and turned to walk back along the little path back to the hotel. Turning back to look again, I couldn't see her from behind the rocks, but I shouted her name, and if she'd be there tomorrow, and on the slowly gathering breeze, I heard her gentle happy voice say ' I'll never leave this place'
A smile on my face, and the icy cold skin of her wind kissed. cheek still against my lips, I couldn't wait to go back the next day to see her.
I sleepily stumbled my way through the day, as It did its best to drag like a lead weight. Finally the sun set, and I headed down to the beach a few hours early, just to see if she was as eager to see me as I was her.
The last glimmers of sunshine lit my path to the edge, and I sat down on the rocks. She was not here yet.
As the darkness started to break through the last glimpses of sunshine, I crept my way to the edge, and I looked into the water just below where I was sat, and noticed a few scrunched up bags laying on top of a large rock below me, just above the surface of the water.
I climbed down for a closer look, and found it was plastic wrap, normally wrapped around flowers, with a small piece of card inside.
It was soaked, and the waves and salt that had built up onto it in the years it was lying there had made the ink weep into the paper. I could just about make out the words
"Jessica. You will be forever missed" before the words were unreadable.
I sat down, and looked into the water in shock, before grabbing a handful of flower petals from a small plant besides me, before I sprinkled them into the water. I sat and watched as the slow waves formed and carried them out to sea, before quietly turning back to the hotel, to leave Jessica, and the cove she found so beautiful, in peace once again.
