Daddy, why's your face all wet and red?
Why's there blood under Mummy's nails?
The screaming woke Teddy up
And made him a-scared and pale.
Who wished Death into the house
And the other to Jesus' keep?
And who called the other nasty names?
Teddy shouldn't have heard a peep.
Why is Mummy crouched at the cupboard
And you on the bottom stair?
Why are there broken plates all around
And a bad feeling in the air?
Why do you shout all these bad things
After I go to bed?
Teddy can't sleep a wink
With that horrible noise in his head.
Are you happy or are you sad?
Does Mummy hurt you each night?
Or is it you who does the harm
And make her cower in fright?
No-body knows on the street outside.
Jack and Thomas don't know a thing.
But, are you supposed to act like this
When you both wear a prettiful ring?
No-body comes to stop you.
No-body comes to call.
But how do I know not to worry
When Teddy can't sleep at all?
How did you like this story?

Powerful-is it written from personal experience? You obviously don't have to answer that😌 I'm halfway through a piece on the same subject....some of it is proving difficult to write😔
@Fly10 no just some practice at empathy although there've been some of my parents friends who have very unfortunately experienced this 😔 it is very difficult to write but it helps if you completely let go and really get in the head of the narrator
@Delilah I grew up with exactly what you describe. Reason I'm only halfway through my piece, is that I have to be in the right frame of mind to write it! Your portrayal was interesting & well written 😌
Chilling and brilliant. Really impressed your ability to convey really powerful emotions through real innocent narrative. Great poem :)
Lovely personal insight. Something all teddies have to deal with. Really well composed and full of that personal touch.
