I look into the mirror,
There's cracks along the glass,
A world to look into,
Staring into a mask.
There's a beautiful young girl
Trapped behind the pane,
Beauty held hostage by a world
That's only got itself to blame.
A girl that's unattainable
And clouded by a mist,
A haze brought on
By an inadequacies list.
The world is hurting, slashing her
With the shards of glass,
Making her a bloody shell.
Now their only task
Is scarring her, carving her
To live up to what they say.
I pound at the looking glass
And feel it all give way,
Bad luck in store for me
Trying to save her, stop
The frenzy that destroyed her
Superficial beings run amock.
The pane now is empty,
My efforts all failed,
But I had to do something
The pain and blood were so real.
I felt each sharp comment
As it dug into my skin,
Felt each hacking blow
As the bloodbath did begin.
Now it's all apparent,
Oh so clear to see
That that girl once bright and bonny
Now mutilated was me.
