Sorry, bit of a short one! Really wanted to get it out though! More on the way :)
A week. A week and Drew still hadn't told me what she was going to say. I'd given her hints. I'd even asked her point blank. "What were you going to say the other day?". And she'd pretend like it had never even happened. Pretend like I didn't tell her all those things. It was beginning to irk me. And even worse, I had another irk on my mind. A brand new, southern, horse-back riding, hair-flipping, dazzle-smiling irk.
Let me tell you what went down....
I pulled up at Drew's place on a Friday night, expecting her to be out and about brushing Dallas or tending to the other horses.
I stared around the yard, looking for any sign of the Texas girl. Nope. She wasn't anywhere. I was suddenly startled by the noise of a horse neighing excitedly, and I spun around to find the source of the noise.
Across from me, in the biggest, greenest field of the ranch, was Drew. She sped through the tall, vibrant grass on Dallas, the horse throwing her head back in pure joy. I jogged over to the fence, leaning against the hard wood and watching the way the two partners moved together. Graceful and swift, the two complimented each other in the way they flew across the field.
I grinned at the sight, loving hearing Drew's joyful laugh as Dallas ducked her head down to take a bite of the rich grass.
Hold on. Who the crap is that? Coming flying across the field, on a horse as white as snow, came a boy. Me and Drew's age. Dark brown, messy hair from what I could see, and fairly good looking. As they neared the gate, I walked to meet them, kind of threatened by the good-looking guy.
"Justin!" Drew smiled as the two slowed their horses and clambered off, leading them out of the field to stand beside me. "Hey" I smiled as Drew pulled me into a hug. I looked over her shoulder at the unnamed hot dude.
He had golden eyes, with flecks of silver near the centre, his face very boyish, and tanned, with one or two dark freckles on his cheekbones. A dazzling smile on his face every time he looked at Drew. I wonder If I looked like that when I see Drew. If it's that obvious I like her, cuz right now, this dude is looking at Drew like she's his angel. I'd probably just drool or something. Like a boss ;)
He looked pretty muscular.
Fuck.
"This is Frank, he's a stable hand here" Drew beamed. Fuck, he even had a perfect name to go with those dang cheekbones. Oh fuck he flipped his hair. Too far. "Nice to meet you man" I lied through my teeth, the most convincing fake smile I had worn in years plastered across my face. "Yeah you too". Dazzling smile. Cheekbones. Southern accent. Ugh. Frank. "Uh... ok then, Frank, I'll see you later" Drew turned to the guy, and he smiled - dazzlingly - and gave her a hug. "Yeah, see you Drew" Frank smiled, before walking the white horse around the side of the stables.
I gave Drew a look. Drew gave me a look. "Frank, huh?" I nodded, a sort of pissed off smile on my face. "Yeah. Frank" she nodded in reply, amused at my frustration.
It wasn't funny. Frank with his stupid flippy hair and cheekbones the size of... haha I was going to say Texas, and I'm in Texas, so I think Texas would be offended. I'll say china instead. Let's try that again: Frank with his stupid flippy hair and cheekbones the size of china. (Achievement right there ;)).
I followed Drew as she led Dallas into the stable and bolted it shut. "So what's up with you and... Frank" I said his name like it left a bad taste in my mouth - which it did. Drew wandered around the stables, fixing and fiddling with random things like water buckets and hay nets. "Me and Frank? Oh nothing. We're cool" she shrugged, not looking up at me to speak. Yeah. Cool. "So you guys aren't dating... right?". She shook her head. "But you don't think he's cute right?".
"Oh come on Justin, you'd have to be blind not to think he's cute".
What? What? No. You don't. I think he's hanging and I can see perfectly fine. "I must be blind as fuck then" I chuckled, aiming to make her laugh. Nope. Not even a titter. She began to walk away from me, but I followed swiftly behind "Oh come on Tex, he's not that amazing". She began to fill a red bucket with horse, feed ignoring my statement until she stood up straight, and raised her eyebrows. "Ok, he's alright, but I'm hotter, right?". No answer. "Right?". What? Was she serious? Frank, over me? No. No I would not believe it. "Drew, you're not serious...". She seemed annoyed and frustrated with my obsession with the topic. "Why does it bother you so much Justin? Why? It's not as if you love me or anything".
Ok. That hurt. "We're friends, right? If you want anything more, I suggest you tell me now". Say it. Say it. Tell her you're in love with her. Do it.... I froze. I completely froze. How could I tell her? What if she didn't love me back? That would ruin us. Ruin our friendship. Not that it was much of a friendship anymore, it was more me in love with her, her... well, I don't know how she felt. And I never would. "Nothing. You have nothing to say to me. After you told me all those sweet things the other day... you don't love me. I find it hard to believe". She threw her arms out beside her for a moment, almost waiting for me to speak. I couldn't. I couldn't say I didn't love her, and I couldn't say I did. I was caught between a rock and a hard place. "Fine. Then I don't love you either".
And that, killed me.
Ugh. Frank even annoys me. :P
