Time stood still. Everything around Roxy became a blur as she raced towards the pay phone, knowing that if she didn't reach it, she may never see her family again.
How long had it been ringing? It feel like an eternity to Roxy. She got closer, the phone still ringing. Relief spread across her face as she grabbed the phone. "Hello?!" she shouted down the phone.
"Ah, Roxy you made it. I thought you had lost your chance," A deep, gravely voice responded.
"Where are they? What have you done to my family?" she screamed down the phone, getting angrier and more desperate with every second that passed.
"Do you seriously think that I am going to tell you where they are? You're far too optimistic for a writer, Roxy."
A chill went down her spine. How much did he know about her and her family? "What do you want from me?" Roxy asked desperately, wanting to see her family more than anything in the world.
"I have a few errands for you to run, that will give you clues as to where your family is. However, tell anyone about what you're doing and why you're doing it, and you will never see Miles and Jacob again. Do you understand?"
Roxy felt more lost than ever. How was she meant to fight this? What were these clues going to be? Had the man on the phone already killed her family, and was now mocking her? Roxy began to cry at that thought. The rain that had been threatening earlier came down in full force, drenching Roxy within minutes. She remembered how earlier that night, her biggest concern of the evening had been Miles coming home late from work. How times had changed so dramatically in such a short amount of time.
As she stood there, absorbing everything that had happened over the last 30 minutes, she realised something: she mustn't give up. "Yes," She replied firmly.
"Fantastic. Walk back to your car, you will get the text then." The line went dead. Roxy stood there for a second, composing herself for the journey ahead. Who knew where this quest to get her family back would take her? As she walked back to her car, rain pounding down on her unrelentingly, she was more determined than ever to find her family.
