I gazed across the room at him, his golden hair gleaming as he made his way across the classroom. He stopped to sit on a table in front of his friends, and promptly blocked the sunlight from reaching my eyes, and instead illuminated his hair more than before. He shifted his head back and forth, making he light flash before my eyes, blinding me.
I loved Nate. I had for a long time, ever since we met when we were 10, at boarding school. We were good friends, and we had inevitably stayed that way after moving schools together for the past 7 years.
He noticed me gazing at him, and came wondering over, and took the free seat next to me, greeting me with a kiss on the cheek. This was the custom at our school, the trend that everyone was currently following, boys and girls alike. It was weird, but when Nate did it it seemed perfectly normal.
He was oblivious to me shifting in my seat to sit nearer him, whilst we discussed our plans for the summer break. He only noticed my advances when his leg brushed mine by accident. He recovered by laughing and moved himself away slightly.
"You look lonely" he said as I stared into the desk, following the wood grain with my eyes until it reached his elbow, which was resting nonchalantly on the desk.
"I'm not," I replied "honest."
I lied, and he knew it. I had lost my aunt to cancer a few months ago, and it seemed like everything was crashing down. I've never been that close to my family, but I had been unbearably close to my aunt before she died.
And he knew that too.
"Okay," he responded, sounding certain that he knew otherwise, "but if you ever are, come and talk to me. You know the guys like you, so come and sit with us whenever you want, alright?" he added sympathetically.
"Sure." I said, and he put his arm around me and kissed my forehead; just as our teacher walked in.
"No PDA in here please Nathaniel. Will you be taking up residence near Tiffany's seat from now on?"
"Umm sure, I suppose" Nate said, heading over to the other side of the room to pick up his books. "But we're just friends, I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea sir!" he laughed and so did the rest of the class, as Mr. Robert's had a reputation for matchmaking within the class.
This was how it had always been: me head over heels in love with him; him being totally oblivious to every compliment, every move and every adoring look. Little did I know things would change over the fast approaching summer..
