Love You So: PART SEVEN

The day after the exam, Mollie and I went to a spa for a day out. As we sat next to each other on the reclined chairs, hands outstretched, waiting for our manicures, she looked across at me, her face green due to the gloopy face mask that was earlier applied.
"T, are you alright with me? I can't help but pick up on something. I don't know what it is, but I know something isn't right with you, and its causing things to be bad between us. You know you can tell me anything!"
"that's just the problem," I said, immediately regretting my choice of words as her face dropped, and a globule of the green mask dropped too.
"I mean, do you remember everything I tell you?" I added, trying to get myself out of the hole I was digging for myself.
"98%, sure"
"and you'd remember if I had an infatuation with someone?"
"of course I would!" she replied
"then why did you do it? I know you're not one of those girls who wants to steal her best friend's love, or that you're jealous of me. I don't know what would possess you to go for someone you knew I clearly like"
Just as the tension was rising between us, and Mollie stuttered, trying to form an explanation in her head, the women who were going to be giving us our manicures came over and asked us both
"Square or round tips?"
"Round" said Mollie
"Round too please" I hated having to agree with Mollie's choice. Why hadn't I been a split second faster with my decision? I looked over at her. She looked like she was about to cry.
"I'm sorry M, I just don't understand.. I know you like Nate, but I've loved him for so much longer. You know that better than anyone."
"I know I do. But sometimes it's hard: being me I mean."
"How come?" I asked "you're beautiful, you get amazing grades, you have incredible dress sense, boys adore you," I explained "what could possibly be wrong with having a life like that?"
"Do you remember my ex Jordan?"
I did. He cheated on her time and time again, before deciding that he wasn't into girls anymore, and he then cheated with another boy. This had all been revealed on a social networking site shortly before they broke up 5 months ago.
"Sure I do, but what's he got to do with Nate?"
"It's a confidence thing I suppose," she began, "I know Nate really well, and I know he would never treat me the way Jordan did. I need a boy in my life T... And let's face it, Nate fits the bill pretty nicely."
"But Mollie, there are tonnes of guys at our school who can do that for you. Why did you have to pick my man?"
"Your man? Your man?" she started to go ballistic. "If you haven't noticed, he's my man now. You're crazy, he doesn't belong to you, he doesn't belong to anyone. And if he has to belong to one of us, it'll be me."
And with four nails painted an emerald green, she stormed off into the changing rooms, leaving a trail of anger and despair, and me feeling humiliated and disappointed: disappointed that my best friend of 10 years may have just left me over one boy.
Then, one of the staff who was painting my nails whispered "I'm on your side, from what I've heard." and with that, she popped her head back down, and continued painting my nails in a scarlet shade, a shade that some would describe as maroon.
