(Careful - Spoilers, if you haven't watched the movie and want to. :S)
Now, I have read all the books and were extremely thrilling. When the movie came out I was extremely excited!
So let me give you some background - HOKAI! There are these 13 districts, and now 12 (find out why later) and the closer you get to the Capitol the more richer the district is, now if a person doesn't have like funky coloured hair or clothing, they are not seen as normal. But anyway, one day District 13 began to rebel against the Capitol and caused an uprising, and so the Capitol decided to blow up that whole district, and each year, to show their dominance and to remind the districts who's boss they hold the 'Hunger Games' where two tributes, one boy and one girl, are chosen from each district to compete in this 'fight till the death' game, and who ever is last man standing wins and becomes famous, kinda..
I was expecting the film to be quite exciting, I wasn't as overwhelmed by it than I was with the books, yet I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't wowed. I was expecting more.
Although, the characters and the acting was quite good, Peeta was exactly how I imagined him to be, and Katniss and Gale. The actors took on each of their roles very well. The one thing that annoyed me is that they didn't show more scenes with Buttercup, (the evil black cat), those were some funny scenes in the book, and always gave me hope because it showed that even through her hardship Katniss still had a sense of humour. Gave me hope.
Anyway, I thought the film went into the whole Hunger Games scene too quickly, people who haven't read the books wouldn't have understood the concept of it, why they do it and the whole preparation plan. Plus there wasn't a lot of background on Katniss and her sister and her mum, Peeta and Gale it was all quite confusing. It started right in the middle and it was quite predictable. Katniss comforting Prim that she wasn't going to get chosen basically made it so predictable that she was going to get chosen, plus the adverts didn't help, they basically showed all the good parts which made the movie a bit, how shall I put this...'meh' :/. There wasn't any build up to the tribute ceremony and they went straight in with the preparations, (basically when the tributes are chosen they go through this preparation where they train and show off to the audience their skills and everything, and the audience bet on who they think is going to win, and the person who is liked the most sometimes gets these presents to help them along the game, like food or medicine) This is later explained in the movie, yet still everything seemed so predictable. As soon as I started watching the movie and as the plot carried on, I had the ending pretty much figure out. Peeta finding these berries that kill, it was all too obvious. Although the death of Rue brought a little tear to my eye.
Anyway, I'm just going to skip to the ending, the moment I was waiting for, and that was when it all ended, when Plutarch said that two people could win the games, I automatically knew it was going to be Peeta and Katniss, and I wasn't proven wrong. As the movie was coming to an end, and Katniss and Peeta were the last two standing, Plutarch 'randomly' stated that now only one tribute must win, and what happens? Katniss brings out the berries, and they both planned to commit suicide so no one won, it was all too obvious, Plutarch then stopped them and they both won. :| It annoyed me that they decided to end it like that, no twist or tragedy, quite disappointing.
Although, they did leave the ending to be quite ambiguous, who knows? They might do a second one and that one would be much more intriguing.
The movie wasn't at all bad, it just wasn't up to the standards I was expecting, the books are much more better. :)
I would give it a - 5/10
May the odds forever be in your favour!
