I Before E

E and I are poor confused letters,
Don't know which order to go for the better.
One will jump left, the other jump right,
Still can't get the right way, try as they might.

I can't believe this sad tale is true,
I grieve for I and E, they're always blue!
Why is it so hard for them to receive,
The right way around in words we perceive?

E and I are befuddled, all turned around,
No matter the order they make the same sound.
Surely it must be the devil's hand?
To make them miss order throughout all the land.

But these poor letters can be tamed away,
In this poem I'll show you the way.
It's an age old rhyme, come say it with me,
Repeat: "I before E except after C!"

Now you've got that go read it again,
Repeat the second verse, now do you ken?
E and I can be calm, happy and free,
Now you've learned to tame poor I and E!

I, too, greive for such errors...😜

@Nom 😄

There are more exceptions to that rule than conformants. It is no longer being officially taught in schools, though some still teach it. An example of an exception is "their"..

@Earthbound Very true and nicely caught. ;) With 'their' we're also talking another grammar game of homophonic heterographs. Isn't the English language fun? ;)

@Nom Oh, if I had a penny for every time... :D

@Snowy you'd be a poor man/woman? ;)

I love it. 💜

This is great!

Brilliant! Trying to get my daughter to grasp this...I shall read her your poem 😉

Ahhh. This one actually does trip me up. I have it in my head that there are one or two exceptions to the rule which has rendered me completely inept when dealing with I and E

@Earthbound what the heck?! No wonder I've been so confused by this "rule". Hardly really a rule if the exceptions outweigh it : {

@Snowy Nice one 👍

@crowncottage 😝😄

@Nom Lol, woman. Now I have to ask about you ;)

@redfae Aw, thanks! Thank you for reposts too, very kind of you!

@ashhkat thank you! Glad you liked :)

@Fly10 Lol, awesome, thanks! Should be ideal for beginners. :)

@ckahn it's a complicated one, isn't it? It catches out a lot of people still. For this I worked off keeping it simple.

@ckahn Aw, I hope I didn't disappoint? I'd be here all day doing all the exceptions... Although maybe I could do a part two for you... ponders

@TheViolator Thank you! Thanks so much for reposts, very kind! :)

I still use it to assist with words such as "friend" and "piece".

@Snowy I assume that's "there", they're" and "their". Strangely, I've never had a problem with that. "Were" and "where" had me stumped for a while, though, as did "your" and "you're", but I'm fine with them now. "night" and "knight surprisingly never confused me, and, if I'd stop waffling on for a second about irrelevant things, we could get back on topic.

@Snowy the opposite!
