"Don't look back.... Don't look back!", "keep moving.... Look straight ahead!".
His voice was soft and breathless, still holding her hand he said:
"Honey just keep moving, and quietly, don't make a sound. Keep an eye where your placing your feet when you step, and stay real close to the ground."
His eyes where wired and panicked, her face was ashen in shock.
Both of them acting on instinct, both in a mental block.
They had heard about this in Miami, the man who ate some guys face.
But this was down town Los Angeles, it was happening all over the place.
So much for some new street drug, hallucinogenic L.S.D.
Maybe something in the water or a crazy new disease.
They had not had time to think it through, or try to work it out.
Now their thoughts where geared to survival, not how it had come about.
"I'm tired, I can't keep going", through stinging tears she spoke.
"Just keep fucking moving, this isn't some practical joke!"
"I can't, I can't go on anymore, I'm breathless and need to rest".
He thought: I barely know this girl.
Now his loyalties where put to the test.
He only knew her as a colleague at the local convenience store.
They where working on the same shift, when the first one came through the door.
He was bleeding, he was bloody, he was missing half his face.
Then another and another , they where all over the place.
People started screaming, there was carnage in the isles.
Gore and horror everywhere, at first he watched in denial
This was L.A after all, with crazy shit all the time, but people eating other people was a whole new kind of crime.
There where gunshots, there where sirens, and he simply grabbed her hand, dragged her to the fire escape, kicked open the door, and ran.
But now she was a burden, he couldn't move with her as fast.
Why should he take her with him?
There was no way she could last.
"Ok, you wait here", he said: "I'll take a look ahead... I'll be back for you I promise".
With that he turned and fled.
About three hours later, well rested she advanced.
Heading in the same direction, she came across him again by chance.
He had fallen and broken his femur, overloaded with supplies.
She said: "You said you'd be back for me? I think your promises where lies."
"I was! I swear! I promise!", he looked up to her to say.
Her response was simple, with a wicked dry smile: "You where going the other way!".
"I always thought you where an asshole! Hey, and Thank's for these supplies..... Oh, and good luck with that leg of yours! I guess I'm not good with goodbyes."
She walked away quite calmly, and she didn't turn around, as he begged for her to help him, she walked away without a sound.
She just kept on moving, some way behind she heard a cry.
Never mind, she never liked him.
Stupid fucking guy.
