As I stood with Heather, talking, I felt someone's hand run through my hair, and turned around. Paul stood, grinning at me.
He did the same thing to Heather, who glared playfully at him.
"Do not mess up my hair!" she cried.
I smiled at Paul, and as soon as I did, the bell rang.
"Walk me to Spanish," Paul told Heather.
When she objected, he grabbed her hand and held it firmly in his, pulling her.
My heart jumped, and I nearly choked on jealousy.
"No, no, no," Heather giggled. "Let me go, let me go."
I laughed, shielding my hurt and following them to go to Forensics.
They left me, walking together, and I was surprised to feel tears prick my eyes.
"Don't be an idiot," I told myself. "Don't be an idiot and cry because he flirted with another girl."
Later, on my way to Literature, I saw Paul in the Learning Connections room, and walked in.
He looked up at me, and his face put on a bored expression. "Oh, hey."
"Hey," I said, looking at him.
He looked down at his notes.
"Everything okay?" I asked.
"I have to study," he said coldly.
"Oh...well...bye, then," I turned away from him, and saw my other friends walk through the door.
As I was giggling about something with Amy, I heard Paul say my name.
"Em," he said. He was smiling at me, and waved me over.
He started talking to me and laughing like nothing was wrong.
I went to class, and sat next to Tom, who smiled.
"I saw Paul and Heather," he said.
"Oh...really?" I said carefully.
"Yeah, when Period 2 began," he replied.
I swallowed. That was way after the time I'd seen him drag her to Spanish.
"Wh-what were they doing?" I asked softly.
"I dunno, holding hands," he shrugged. "Swinging them back and forth like a happy couple."
Tom has never liked Paul. In fact, Tom had forbidden me to go see Paul during lunch one time, which severely angered Paul. The two had a confrontation, and started butting heads.
Ever since then, Paul has always tried to push Tom's buttons. He knows Tom has a soft spot for me, so whenever he's around, Paul touches me or tickles me or leans really close to me. It's a game he plays...I don't know if I like it or not.
So when I heard that Paul and Heather had been holding hands, my mouth dropped. "Wh-what?"
"Yeah," he said, shrugging again. "I dunno."
"Uh...I..." I looked away from him, tears clouding my vision.
"Don't be an idiot," I reminded myself. "Don't be an idiot."
Tom noticed my change in mood, and asked what was wrong.
"N-nothing," I said, trying to smile. "Don't worry about it."
I held back my tears all the way through Literature.
Then, I realized I had a free period for the lunch period. Which means I would be eating with Paul.
