A Cranky Old Man

What do you see nurses? . . . . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . . . . when you're looking at me?
A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . . with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food .. . .. . . . . and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . . . . .. 'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice . . . . .the things that you do.
And forever is losing . . . . . . . . . . A sock or shoe?

Who, resisting or not .. . . . . . . . . . . let’s you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding . . . . . .The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking? . . . . . . Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse . . . . . . you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am . . . . . . . As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, . . . . . . as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten . . . . . . . with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters .. . . . . . . . who love one another

A young boy of Sixteen . . . . . with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now . . . . .. . . a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at Twenty . . . . . . . my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. . . . . . that I promised to keep.

At Twenty-Five, now . . . . . ... . . . . I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . . And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty . . . . . . . . .. My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . . . . . . With ties that should last.

At Forty, my young sons .. . . . . have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me . . . . . . . to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, . . . . . . ..Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . . . . My loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me . . . . . . . . My wife is now dead.
I look at the future ... . . . . . . . . . . . . . I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing . . . . . . young of their own.
And I think of the years . . .. . . . . And the love that I've known.

I'm now an old man . . . . . . . . . and nature is cruel.
It's jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. . . . ... . . . . . grace and vigour, depart.
There is now a stone .. . . . . .. . where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass . . . .. A young man still dwells,
And now and again . . . .. . . . my battered heart swells
I remember the joys . .. . . . . . . . .. . I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living . . . . .. . . . . . . . . life over again.

I think of the years . all too few . . . . . . gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . . . . . . that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people . . . . . . . . open and see.
Not a cranky old man . Look closer . . . . see . . . . . .. . ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an older person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within . . . . . we will all, one day, be there, too!

This has been credited to many people over the years. Whoever wrote it did it well. It wasn't me though!

Love this Linda! It's very true😊❤👍

A great poem and a great reminder thank you for sharing it 😘💐

@sjw @LittleKitten Thank you both, I saw it for the first time about 20 years ago. I'm sure most people have seen it too but for the ones who haven't, I thought it was worth posting! Thanks to all for the reposts too! 😌

Thanks for posting this Linda - you've made a cranky old man very happy! 😊👍👏

@TheCodsPollocks I am glad, from this cranky old woman! 😽

I read this on Facebook the other day. It's really quite special isn't it.

@eddie12309 did you? I didn't see it on there but a friend sent this version to me today. The one I know is, Cranky old woman, basically the same thing. That's why I said there are several versions but the message is the same regardless! ☺😽

@crowncottage yes it was doing the rounds with a picture of an old man, with the story that a nurse found the poem after he died.

@eddie12309 that must be where my friend picked it up. The first time I read the original I was blown away by it as it's so clever, and true too! 👴👵

I'd never seen it Linda, thanks for posting it. 👍 Really good poem ❤🌹

@leelee101 Glad you agree too Lee and thanks for the repost! ☺😽

This is beautiful. It's a wonder how so many people can paint words just as good as you.

@Onixea Did you realise that I didn't write this myself, I just posted it on Opuss because I thought people might enjoy reading it. Whoever did write it did it very well! 😊

@crowncottage it doesn't matter thougg

@crowncottage it doesn't matter though! You've got the heart of an angel! No one could REALLY paint such good words

@LollipopSwirl Thank you! 😽

I have read this before too. Many years ago, when I first became a nurse. Older people are so amazing I love to hear their stories, I could listen for hours! Great poem thank you so much for posting it. 🌟✨🌟✨

@sleepydragon thank you for commenting. Yes, it's a shame more people don't realise the wealth of wisdom being wasted by thinking that old people are boring. As with young people, there are good and bad, plus they have been around for a long time! 😊

@RichWithey yes it's remarkable. This is slightly different from the one I read originally which was called A Cranky Old Woman. Someone obviously changed it to suit their situation, it's still good though and so true! 🙍

I absolutely love this poem!!!! Amazing, magnificent, so glad you found this and posted it!!:)

Amazing @crowncottage! Love it!!!

@cperry I am glad you do too. It's slightly different from the original that I saw, that was called 'A crabbit old woman' if you want to check it out. Either way, the message is very important and I share it with anyone who will listen. My mother suffered from dementia and it was easy to forget that she had been a beautiful, intelligent woman in the past! 😽

Missed this but just read it and it is brilliant! Thank you for sharing this... Wherever you found it! 💓😊👍

@Janflower thanks! ☺😽

@misstezzaa thanks for the repost! ☺😘

Sorry, @misstezaa I spelt it wrongly

@crowncottage no problemo, I love this! :)

@misstezaa me too! 😘
