'umm, mum this is Abby, you know the girl I'm engaged to.' Adam said desperately, shooting me apologetic looks.
'oh' she said looking me up and down disapprovingly. She walked over to close the door, looking around outside as if to check if Adam had someone else outside.
'leave your bags here, your father will take them up when he gets home.' she ordered, waving her hand around despairingly.
'come in to the living room, oh and you.' she said pointedly at me, 'can call me Eileen.'
Adam and I sheepishly followed her into the living room. It was a beautifully decorated room, that was simple yet stylish. 'Eileen, your house is so beautiful.' I said admiringly as I took everything in.
'hmmm quite different from what your used to is it?' she sneered.
'umm..' I looked at Adam not quite knowing what to say to that. He smiled apologetically and looked at his feet. All of a sudden, his mum grabbed my hand. 'what a beautiful ring that is.' she croaked, shooting daggers with her eyes at Adam. Feeling the tension in the room rise I excused myself to find the bathroom. No sooner than I had shut the door did I hear angry whispers. 'you gave her your grandmothers ring....'
'mum I told you her name was Abby not Cathy...' Adam shot back a few moments later but I had missed half of the conversation. 'can I help you?' I nearly jumped out of my skin and then blushed at being caught at eavesdropping. A man a bit younger than Adam and I stood in front of me, he had Adams boyish grin, but his hair was more of a light hazel colour. 'umm.. I...' I stuttered.
'it's fine,' he smiled 'is mum giving you a hard time.' I smiled not wanting to answer incase she heard me. 'I'm Alex, by the way. Adams younger brother.' he extended his hand out. 'Abby.' I replied shaking his hand. He had the same easy going way that Adam did, I wondered where they got it from, which was certainly not from their mother. Adam strode out quickly of the living room, looking vaguely annoyed. 'oh there you are, I see you've met Alex.' he said lightly but I could still see the agitation etched on his face. Alex and I both nodded. 'we are just going to go upstairs and unpack, call us when dad gets home.' Adam said to Alex. Great I thought another psycho family member I have to meet. When Adam had finished hauling our bags upstairs, and as I started unpacking I looked up at him innocently and asked, 'Who is Cathy?'
