In his pocket, cold and stiff
A lifetime can be found, entombed
In leather, once fair penny's worth
Now shabby memorial to the doomed.
7.25 in change
Water-stained snapshot of happier times,
A paper snowflake signed by Sarah,
A little girl he's left behind?
A wedding ring, now removed
From pride of place on his left hand,
A library card, tattered bus ticket
From a one-way journey, just as planned.
Can every life be melted down
To fit in such a tiny space?
And if so, what is it all worth
A heart, a mind, a soul, a face?
