I sit here on the swing set,
Alone,
The brook nearby feels like home,
An old photo in my hand,
I smiled,
Remembering when we played in the sand,
That box is gone now and our tree house is old,
We were so little,
Now the story is told.
Then the teenage years,
All those stupid boys,
Only you dried my tears,
I stared at the blossom tree,
It makes me want to cry,
That's where you first kissed me,
Young and wild and free,
Oh how we used to be.
I look up at the sky,
So calm,
Reminds me you were such a great guy,
Then down at my ring,
A beautiful wedding day,
Such a reason to sing,
I let out a laugh,
You were so worried,
On my behalf,
That something wouldn't go right,
But everything turned out all right.
I swing up higher,
To clear my mind,
You were perfect to me,
Everything I wanted to be,
That confident face,
Always there to help,
Cover over and trace,
Leading and guiding,
Telling me it's alright,
Getting my opinion before deciding.
I started to slow my swing,
Took a deep breath,
My mind flashed through the scene,
We were going for a stroll,
To chat like good old times,
Not knowing you would take the toll,
A car swerved off the road,
You took the fall pushing me out of the way,
I stopped swinging tears rolling down my face,
That was the worst day.
I stared at the ground,
Now it's just me,
The old photo I found,
I looked at it now,
It was a picture of us,
In this backyard,
All covered in dust,
It should have been me,
Not my darling,
But I'll leave it be,
I forgave that driver,
But I won't forget,
It's okay though I'll carry on strong,
That's what you'd do,
I'll sing out in song,
And live life to the fullest,
For it's a must,
We're still together forever,
This is the story of us.
