You say you're ok,
But you can't fool me:
I know those green eyes too well
To ignore the missing sparkle;
The tone of your voice
Flat, lacking the usual joy,
Gives away the truth;
I can tell when your smile
Is forced through gritted teeth,
And not genuine.
Something is wrong.
But you wont talk about it,
You always keep your pain hidden,
Locked quietly within,
Behind bravado and fakery,
Unless I ply you with
Too much alcohol,
Then it all comes flooding out;
Last time you even shed a tear
As you held me, shaking,
'Always on my mind'
Playing in the background.
So when I ask "Are you ok,"
Don't just reply with a "sure, I'm fine,"
Because I know when you lie.
I want to kiss it all better;
The hurt, the upset
Of the last two years.
God knows you've listened
And helped me through
More than you know.
So let me be
A rock, a wall, a protection,
A light, a shoulder to cry on,
A friend, a lover, and more,
For as long as you need me,
Here I'll be.
