Through Her Eyes

Through Her Eyes

"It was a dark and stormy night," Rebecca said. Her voice was low and the campfire made her beautiful face into something to be afraid of. "Tom Carter was peacefully sipping his homemade hot chocolate from his great grandmother's recipe when he heard a distant howl."
"Specific much?" Tom smirked beside me. He seemed amused rather than annoyed as he heard Rebecca use him as the main character in her horror story.
Rebecca ignored him. "Tom lives in a village in the middle of nowhere so wolf howls were common, but!"
She suddenly got up and pointed a finger at Tom. "Then he heard someone knocking at the door. Now, who could that be, he thought."
"Maybe my grandma," Tom said. I giggled along with others of my friends.
Rebecca glared. "Seriously Tom! You're ruining the scary story portion of camping!"
"Camping?" Tom asked. He rolled his eyes. "Your house is only a few yards away Becca."
Rebecca's blue eyes glared daggers at Tom. "Humph!" She tossed back her hair and sat down. "I guess you don't want to hear the ending of the story," she said.
"No," Tom admitted. "But I'll listen if Cassie wants to," he said, turning everyone's attention to me.
"Well?" Rebecca asked. She waited for me to give her the signal to go on. I pulled my hood over my head to hide my face.
"Um...if-if you want to," I stuttered.
Rebecca sighed. "You're cold aren't you?" she asked.
"Well, I um..."
She waved my comment off. "Fine, Tom we'll go inside but only because Cassie's scared. Anyways, you get eaten by a wolf at the end of the story."
"Raw?" Tom asked. "It could've cooked me a bit first."
Rebecca ignored him and came to my side. She was only wearing a light sweater, unlike me who was wearing two layers. She pushed back my hood and stared into my face. I fumbled to pull my hood back on but her hands stopped me.
"You don't have to hide yourself from me," she said. "We're friends right? Take of those ridiculous glasses, your eyes are just fine."
I shook my head. "I can't...," I said. My eyes were two different colors, blue and green. It didn't bother me in the least but I hated what I saw through them. Without sunglasses, I was able to see all the bad things about the person I was looking at. At first it wasn't bad as a kid but teenagers aren't that innocent these days.
Rebecca sighed. "Suite yourself."
I watched as Rebecca went inside her house and sat on her couch. Even though it was cold, I stayed outside a bit longer. There was a full moon tonight and what I wanted most was to witness the beautiful scenery. Rebecca's mansion-like house made it easy to witness the moon illuminate the dark night sky.
Pulling my dark hair back into a ponytail, I let the cool wind caress my cheeks. I let my feet lead me to Rebecca's tree house. I was surprised to see Tom sitting there looking up at the sky. He glanced down when he heard me approaching. He grinned and beckoned me upward. I was hesitant but finally decided to join him.
I grabbed a branch to hold me steady. Tom reached out his hand. I could hear a creak and then a snap as the branch I held onto snapped and left me falling. Tom shouted my name and tried to grab my hand but missed. I closed my eyes and waited for the impact.
My eyes snapped open as I felt strong hands hold me. I looked up and found my sunglasses had fallen off. I also noticed there was nothing bad with the person I was staring at. The boy was handsome, smiling, with wings extending from his back. My eyes widened, an angel.
The angel smiled at me. He set me down and lifted a finger to his lips. Keep this a secret. I rubbed my eyes. Was I dreaming? When I opened them again, the angel was gone.
"Cassie!" Tom shouted. He climbed down the tree. His eyes examined me for any injuries. Then he scanned the backyard. "Where's the guy that saved you?"
"You saw him?" I asked. I felt a flood of relief to know I wasn't crazy. "It was an angel."
"Angel?" Tom's voice was confused. "It was just one of my friends. He goes to our school you know."
