"What's with all the racket?" Joe mumbled, stumbling into Tiffany's room where she had slept alone that night. This was evident not only because Nate's side of the bed was still perfectly made up, but also because Joe knew Nate was staying in the second guest room. As he stepped in, he was greeted by the sight of Tiffany rummaging around underneath her bed, scrabbling amongst all her possessions that were held hostage underneath.
"I'm looking for something. Here, can you find the other one?" she said, handing him a pointed toe Chanel alligator shoe.
"Umm alright" he muttered, lowering himself onto his stomach to search for the other shoe whilst Tiffany disappeared into her vast closet in search of a suitable piece of jewellery. "May I ask where you're going dressed like that?" he asked, indicating to her little black dress and the heels he was now holding in his hand.
"To see Will"
"In Chanel?"
"I don't want him to worry about me. If I'm wearing Chanel, then everything seems fine"
"Do you want me to come with you?"
"You could take Serena from me" she said, nodding towards the crib whilst she hopped on one foot, trying to slip on her delicate shoes.
"Of course. I'm more than happy to go with you, I'm sure Nate or Ellie can look after her?"
"I'm sure they can" Tiffany said, holding out her necklace for Joe to put on for her "But I want you to look after her"
"Why me?"
"She's lost one uncle, I want her to be close to one of you" Tiffany said, spinning around once Joe had done up her diamond necklace.
"One thing" he said once he'd given her a once over with his eyes.
"Yes?"
"You're making him a target. Once people know he's related to you, when you're wearing that, they'll either target him for his money or for you. You look absolutely incredible"
"Thank you. He's in a private area of the prison though, no one else will see us together"
"Just take off the diamonds then"
"Fine" she complained, unhooking them and passing them to Joe who carefully placed then back in their velvet padded box.
"Where's Tiffany?" Nate asked, stumbling out of his new room towards the balcony that overlooked the open plan living room.
"Prison" his brother replied.
"What?" Nate said, panic rising in his voice.
"Sorry, she's visiting Will"
"Oh. Has she taken Serena?"
"No, she's right here"
"Good. I don't want her near him or that place"
"Why not, Nate?"
"A prison is no place for a baby!"
"Why don't you want her with Will though? He's her uncle"
"He's also a rapist. I'm sorry, I can have her with him. I just won't let that happen"
"Don't you think you're overreacting--"
"Absolutely not! If I'm honest, I'd rather Tiffany wasn't with him either, but I can't control her"
"Nate, please stop this. Her brother has gone tonsil for something he didn't do and now you're blaming him as well as the rest of the world. Do you really think that Will or Tiffany needs that?"
"No, but I don't want her to get hurt. It's so important that she doesn't, and you know what those kinds of men have done before" Nate said, remembering back to the miscarriage.
"I know we want to protect our women, but why is it as important as you're making it out to be?"
"She's pregnant! She didn't tell you? I thought you two were best buddies" Nate said, taking his child from his brother.
"She did. I didn't know if you wanted me to know, or whatever..."
"Tell everyone. Maybe Tiffany would be more keen to keep it"
"She told me about that too. I honestly think she wants it now though. Don't worth about it mate" Joe said, standing up and patting his brother's shoulder. "Want some breakfast?"
"Please" Nate said, hugging his baby close to his chest and gazing aimlessly towards the window, and out across the backstreets of the Upper East Side.
"So are you going to keep the baby?" Will asked, his prison uniform creating a stark contrast against his tan skin that caused the mind to spin.
"I don't know. I want to, I just don't want it to be a bane to the family and to Nate and I's relationship" Tiffany explained, after Will had asked her to get whatever was on her chest off.
"You've got a month or so before you should get an abortion if you want one. I'd just take your time if I were you and decide carefully"
"Thanks, you have no idea how nice it is to have you here for me, away from everything. How is everything?"
"Just as you'd imagine prison to be. Luckily I can defend myself. I mean, with a little sister with such a turbulent life to protect, I've had some good training" he laughed, taking her hand, before being scalded for breaking the rules of meeting.
"I'll have to bring Serena one day, she'd love to see you again"
"I'm sure she wouldn't. I'm a criminal now, I don't think Nate would be overly pleased"
"He'll just have to deal with it. And you aren't a criminal. You're only a criminal if people believe you are. And no one does, I promise you that"
"Apart from Nate"
"Ignore him. His head's all over the place"
"I don't blame him. If I was in his shoes then I'd probably think the same"
"No matter what he says, I'll always believe that you're innocent. Will, I love you. I hate seeing you like this, but I'm going to support you no matter what. Has anyone else said they'll visit you?"
"Mom and Ellie said they would. But no one else wants to know me, apparently"
"I'm sure they do. I'll find them for you. There's more people than that, there always is"
"Thank you sweetie. Right, you need to go now and you need to go and buy yourself a dress for next week, alright? Go all out, promise me?"
"As if I have to promise!" Tiffany said, laughing and kissing her brother's cheek once, before turning back towards the opening gate at his helpless and trapped face, full of the gloom and depression that life locked away brings.
'Only 16 weeks left' Tiffany thought to herself, sighing and blowing him a kiss back, which he caught with a classic smile.
