Why Are You Religious?

This post is not meant to be offensive, I'm just curious.

Many religious people cannot answer why they follow their religion as opposed to others. Obviously there are many reasons that somebody may be religious, but a question that I have found catches many people out is "Why are you part of the religion that you are?" For example"Why are you Christian as opposed to Muslim?"

My thoughts are that people believe whatever religion they are born into, and when they are children and are told about the religion their parents follow, they follow it blindly without thinking for themselves about why they believe it instead of any other religion.

I Wasn't Gonna Do This

My Opinion On "advice"

Advice is either a relief or a hard truth we don't want to hear. When someone tells us what we want to hear as help, it is a relief. It makes us think we are right.

I would just like to say, I'm Christian and yes, as a child you are "forced" to go to church and whatnot, but when you grow older you always have the choice to believe or not to believe. You always have a choice. Not trying to be mean or anything I'm just try to help you answer your question. I hope this helped.

@ashhkat This is exactly what i wanted :) But can you answer why over another religions god? :)

@ashhkat why you believe in your god over another religions?*

Why over other religions God? As In like why I choose God, is because I know what he did&it was for me and everyone I know that in its self makes him the best person to follow. Also I know him, and want to follow. Does that help?

I do not in any way hate other religions

That's a perfectly good reason :) but have you ever read about the teachings of the Muslim faith? How is it that you came to believe in Christianity rather than following the Muslim faith?

Muslims and christianity are religions which is almost identical. Not much difference. One of it is worshipping. They worship Jesus who we believe is a prophet. Like @ashhkat said, when we grow older, we choose which religion that we want to believe bacause we know its a guidance. Sometimes not everything are based on what we see. We can't see gravity but we do believe its existence. I could say that religion and science are closely related. As for Muslims, the Quran is their main source of guidance along

.....along with the scholars who are there to help interpret the figurative meaning of the contents. A lot of scientific evidence and facts are already stated in the Quran. It's a matter of how strong your will to search for it. I'm sorry if my words are jumbled up but tht's my point of view for now :)

Exactly @abriefstory

There is no evidence AT ALL ,to back up ANY religious claim!!!

The stories contained in ANY religious text are ALL Manmade ,and all tailored to the dark superstitious times in which they were written! And as for being a moral "guide", well if you've actually read for example The Bible, then you would see how murderous/homophobic/racist/jealous/infanticidal the God of this book is!!!

The question of is there a god is all but answered at every turn,by reasoned points backed by evidence in abundance,if only people would care to look!! But the irony is that by religious doctrine,it is a sin to question the word of the book that the words are written in! :-p. that's a bit like saying 'I've got a bar of gold in this box,but your not allowed to look in the box,or ask questions about where or when or how I got it!! You would want some proof before you decided to believe me,wouldn't you?? So apply that same logic to god/gods. Apply it even more so,to grandiose claims, especially of you are going to structure your life around it!!!!!

@Theoretical hey, I'm a Christian and for me it was definitely a choice. I was never made to go to church at all when I was younger, I new of Christ as this little baby in a manger at Christmas. But as I got older I made the choice to seek him and follow him and me personally I don't see myself as being religious I see my Christianity ad a belief and faith. I think religiousness is just about going to church etc.. And real christianity is about having a relationship with God. I admit I have not fully read the Quran or other religions books but from what knowledge I have of them from people I know from those religions, I don't believe there was anyone like Jesus and the great sacrifice he did for me for us.. For me that was undeniable truth. I know that a lot of people just see God as being this vindictive violent entity but I think when you really read the bible and understand free will, sin and it's consequences and the sacrifice God made for that sin then things become clearer... It did for me. I also disagree with your theory about only going into the religion you're born into because there I a lot of Christians that have come from Muslim, Hinduism, Buddhism and many other religions. They have grown up in one religion and chosen to follow Christ. I don't hate any person or religion either I don't believe any true Christian does. I hope this helps 😊

As an atheist,I don't need to have a god to lead a good and moral life. To believe that you are being judged by an all powerful creator of the world is a bizarre thought to me!! I am not saying however, that if there were to be any scrap of clear evidence to prove there was a god(let's not even get started on which one!) then I'm not so closed minded that I wouldn't change my opinion! The fact remains though, that there is not and never has been ANY evidence ever!! To put forward the 'holy' books as evidence is an absolute non-starter,they are cobbled together from various other religions over many hundreds years! Many of which would be ridiculed beyond belief, were they to be around today. The claims made by all religions are at best- rubbishy concocted ,and badly plotted! We're they to be posted on here, they would be rather badly received, and probably categorised as bad amateur crap!!! ,and

The original post to which these comments are linked, still hasn't been addressed!

All the wars EVER fought have been in the name of religion!!! All the wars being fought today are ALL because of religion!!!

To believe something so completely, that you would kill another human being,is dangerous and sick!!

The people who flew the planes on 9/11 weren't evil, they weren't murdering for the sake of it,they TRULY believed that they were carrying out the word of Muhammed !! They believed that they really were doing a good thing, and that they would be rewarded in the 'afterlife' !! They no doubt will be on the list of the worlds most evil people, for believing what their religious teachings told them!! They didn't read between the lines,or make it up. They were taking the Quran at it's word!! They were simply being 'good' muslims!! Just the same as granny at the local church bake sale, believes she is being a good Christian,by selling buns for church funds!

@leebo14 I think the wars are being fought because of Man's faulty interpretation of religious teaching. I am not a religious person but consider myself spiritual. I'be had two very powerful experiences that let me know God is there for us. That being said, I believe that religions are merely different paths up the same mountain. As we reach the top, we see the sameness in ourselves and our beliefs. There is one God who shines different faces in different cultures.

@ckahn what were these experiences that 'let you know' there is a god??? The human mind is an amazing tool,an amazingly evolved tool! But to assign anything spiritual or godly to it's workings is a fallacy !! Spirituality is jus another thread frm the same mumbo jumbo type of BS that people tend to hold onto, because it rings true,or fits in with the world view that they hold! I used to believe in ghosts,I DON'T anymore, because I have reasoned the 'evidence' with myself, and found there to be NONE!! Not one single shred!! F'got me to explain that fact away,I would have to be pretty closed minded!! Religious feuds/wars are and have been fought solely because of what is written in holy books, not because of what's not!! o

Do you not think it slightly contrived to believe that god has shown you specifically that he's real, and not some gravely Ill Somalian child about to die?? It's the same as people who pray that their lotto numbers come up,or that their team will win!! What sort of fucked up god would help a bad football team find success ,but ignore the 5million starving children that die EVERY year in agony and suffering??? If he is real, and that's what he does, then he is no better than Satan is he!!! God is supposedly infalable, yet he is proven to be just that!!
