Do you believe in God or some non-existent super being and follow a religion?. Which one do you believe in.
Here is an rough guide to the worlds religion/population split.
Christianity 2.3 billion,
Islam 2.2 billion
Hinduism 1 billion
Buddhism Circa 680 million
Non-religious or Other 750 million
Which is the right one. Easy, the one with the most followers right?. Just like that celeb on Facebook you follow. He has more followers than the other guy so is more popular and therefore the one you should follow. Wrong!!!.
So if we take it a step further. This is population/religion split of some of the most populated countries on Earth.
India - % aproxamatly. 2001 Census.
Hindu 80%
Islam 13%
Christian 2%
Buddhist 0.77%
United States. % range (they don't ask for this in Census so it based on various surveys)
Christianity 59% to 78%
Islam 0.6%
Buddhism 0.5% to 0.9%
Hinduism 0.4%
The remaining percentage is categorised
as Unaffiliated, so everything else is including Atheism (which is not a religion)
So as you can see, where you happened to be born determines your religion.
Now, these religions and faiths are fairly new in terms of earths history. Yeah sure they are old. Really old. But there are quite a lot of faiths and belief systems that have been kicked to the curb.
I am going to hand you over to Ricky Gervais as he is smarter than I am and makes a hell of a lot more sence than I ever could. This next bit is from his blog.
"Since the beginning of recorded history, which is defined by the invention of writing by the Sumerians
around 6,000 years ago, historians have cataloged over 3700 supernatural beings, of which 2870 can be
considered deities"
he goes on to say
"So next time someone tells me they believe in God, I’ll
say “Oh which one? Zeus? Hades? Jupiter? Mars?
Odin? Thor? Krishna? Vishnu? Ra?…” If they say “Just
God. I only believe in the one God,” I’ll point out that
they are nearly as atheistic as me. I don’t believe in
2,870 gods, and they don’t believe in 2,869."
Statistics above taken from Wikipedia. Yeah I know, but they are pretty much spot on.
