// There is certain boy with certain tendency and instinct...an abnormal and strange similarity of feature resembling that of a spider //
"Emma." A familiar voice beckoned from behind just as I was exiting my room, one hand reaching for the apartment door knob. I froze.
"Emma, please look at me..."
Looking back on this day, I should have never hesitated - I should have run while I had the chance and locked the door behind me. But his voice drew me in like a fox draws in it's prey...
I twisted around and there he was, perched on my open windowsill amidst the billowing curtains as gracefully as a bird perched on a phone wire. He looked the same as ever - airy blue t - shirt, surf washed jeans, sporty sneakers, unruly raven hair...but something in his face seemed unnaturally disturbed. Lines of anxiety crossed his face and a cloud of unease settled firmly above his furrowed brow. Then I noticed his intense eyes that were no longer alive with mischievousness and electricity but now were completely black, glassy orbs staring into me with the most longing expression. Something strange was at play. Now, I shiver recalling his mysterious gaze, those eerie black eyes, always seeming as though they concealed the world's greatest secrets hidden beneath an innocent, youthful face that so many girls had fallen in love with...
"Emma, please...I - I need to explain..." he stammered, balancing himself on the windowsill that overlooked the busy New York street nearly thirty feet below. Something silvery glinted in his palms. It was unmistakable...spider's silk. I gasped.
"Oh..." all I could do was blink at him with watery eyes, a sudden wave of realization hitting me like a brick wall. This explained everything.
"Peter -" I slowly crossed the room towards him, defying every living instinct within me that urged me to flee from this monster.
"....What... are ...you...?" I whispered, all I could muster under a crush of emotions sinking into me.
"My father has five hundred cops searching for you right now."
It was true. Peter's hidden identity covered every newspaper, magazine, and billboard. The entire nation was searching for the boy who could swing through the city on spider's webs ejected from his wrists. It was incredible. Unimaginable.
"Emma, one day when this is over, I'll make you see that I'm a hero." he said gravely with the resolution of a battleship.
"I save lives, and I'll save yours too."
I felt a single tear slide down my cheek. I blinked and then he was gone, leaving the windowsill empty and the curtains billowing in the cold, lonely night.
