Five people in two years have been found murdered on the side of the B10 dual carriage way to Cheshum. It's made all the national papers and has been headline news, but still the killer hasn't been caught. Police believe they are looking for a white male aged between 20 and 40, going on the one sighting they have after the first murder, when an old lady called Mrs Williams saw a man driving away at speed from where the body was found, but so far no arrests have been made.
It was 12 o'clock on Friday night that Lucy found herself walking the five mile stretch of the B10 dual carriage way in the pouring rain. Dressed in her skimpy white sequin all in one tight fitting dress and knee high black boots with just a tiny leather jacket to protect her from the rain. It didn't normally take her long to hitchhike the five miles of carriage way. Most men couldn't believe there luck when they saw a twenty something girl with waist length blond hair and skimpy clothes with her thumb in the air trying to hitch a lift. Lucy was quite surprised it took as long as it did for one to stop.
It was an old battered white transit van that pulled over in the lay by in front of Lucy and the passenger door was opened. As Lucy approached the filthy white van she could see that some joker had written in the dirt on the back of the van 'cleaned by the NHS' and 'I wish my wife was this dirty'. Lucy to wet and cold to raise a smile approached the open van door. 'Need a lift honey?' came a voice from inside the van. As Lucy approached she could see he was roughly 45 years old and largely overweight. He had a large mole on the side of his face and what hair he had left was silver and in no particular style at all. 'Thanks a lot yeah I'd love it if you could drop me at the roundabout please I'm freezing'. Lucy put her hands in her hair and shook out some water before getting in the van. 'Im not surprised yer freezing dressed in that little number, I'm surprised you didn't catch a death in that' he said with a rasping laugh that reminded Lucy of her old school teacher, before pulling away with a wheel spin that made Lucy rock back in her chair.
'So what's a pretty young thing like you doing hitch hiking at this time of night? On this road as well' he said with a raised bushy eyebrow and a quick glance. 'Ive been into town with friends' Lucy answered 'I missed the train back as always and here I am' she then produced a tiny silver hip flask from her coat pocket unscrewed the top 'Sorry do you mind it's only whiskey'. The man laughed again and Lucy noticed him looking out of the corner of his eyes at her legs. 'Only if your going to share honey'. Lucy let out a nervous laugh 'here' she handed him the flask 'finish it if you want I've probably had enough anyway' as he took the flask his hand brushed on her leg for just a split second. Lucy started to think if he meant to do that or was it an accident.
'You make a habit of this honey?, this hitch hiking, I've been up and down this road for the last five years and I've never seen you before' he said before swigging the hip flask and then letting out a rasping cough 'Jesus what you got in hear rocket fuel'. Honey let out her nervous laugh again 'it's my dads whiskey, good stuff apparently and yeah I've done it a few times I mean its a long walk ain't it, who's that?' Lucy pointed to a picture of an old looking lady that was attached to the sun visor in front of her. 'Thats, that's M m Mary she's m m my wife' he slurred as he spoke. 'You ok mate? you look a bit pale all of a sudden you had better pull over'.
The man just managed to pull the van into a lay by before he slumped on the wheel. 'Tut tut tut' said Lucy in a mocking tone 'Don't you know it's dangerous to pick up hitch hikers and especially on this road and its even more dangerous to accept a drink off one'. The man was foaming at the mouth and doubled over with cramps in his stomach. He knew he had been poisoned and felt like he was dying. 'Ma m m Mary' he struggled to say his wife's name as he felt the life drain from his body. Lucy reached over and took his wallet from his coat 'Don't worry about Mary' she said as she looked through the contents '35 Compton Drive, looks like I've got another one to do tonight, don't worry you'll be reunited with Mary soon enough, anyway this is my stop thanks for the lift'. Before he took his last breath he managed to turn and look this women in the eye. 'So pretty but she's got the eyes of the devil' were his last ever thoughts. Lucy shut the door of the van and walked off into the night smiling 'Six and counting' she said out loud with a laugh 'six and counting'.
