There are butterflies called Monarch's,
And I, delicately, have held one of these,
Red deer in autumn rut, is a sight everybody should see, and
I am privileged to have witnessed Sea turtles in Turkey
I have touched alligators in Florida,
And I have watched heron fly in Egypt,
Listened to the English dawn chorus, wept
At the sight of seagulls in a V, suddenly
Appearing when I had such a desperate need
For spirituality. Ancient oak trees
In Shotover Forest, provide branches so
Thick you can lay on and write, and despite
All the shit fired at foxes, I found one,
Befriended it, hand fed it, and watched it
Outrun death.
I have held my breath as I witnessed
A kingfisher dive into a local pond,
Gone for what seemed like minutes,
And then up again, a mouth full of fish fillet.
I listen to wild deer at night; muntjac
I hear them bark, calling to Jack
And owls hoot and I hoot back
And all of these things; so fantastic, so magnificent
Natures endless symphony, such a wonder for me
But I have never seen again love so true
As the love life gave to me and you
