Oh my! Another day of painting the blessed hallway!
I have been decorating now for more than three weeks and all I see around me is mess. I wonder why I bother?
Life is like that though eh? We work our socks off for some end goal of utopia and all around us, left and right is the mess of our world.
Like an ostrich in peril we bury our head in the sand and hope that because we are alright all the bad stuff will disappear. Well hey! It doesn't!
Wake up and smell the poo! - to bastardise a phrase belonging to another utopian dream.
Perhaps this is what middle age is all about you say - to realise the goals you strived for in the first 30 years of your life are really not worth bothering about.
I have another theory though. I have had a lot of time to think about this since finishing work, trust me
You see my goals have changed, rather than strive for the 2.5 kids; by the way, can someone let me know how to get half a child? - on second thoughts!
And the big house and new car STOP! THINK! Look left and right at the crossroads you have come to in your life-then get on your knees - by now the fetish types ears are pricked back and the atheists have hit the escape button.
I am talking of course about praying, praying to our lord about how - you mr and mrs average-can do something to make a difference in your life for others.
I am not talking
about caring for your sick mother, father brother, sister or hamster, things we should in a moral society be duty bound to do.
I am talking about the complete stranger. You know, the one you pass everyday and at best grunt "morning!". At worst bend down to tie the laces of your Gucci slip-on to avoid eye contact.
I am not asking you to betroth yourself, your money or your safety just talk to him or her, it may be met with that certain English reserve, but equally that short discussion whatever it may be about, may rebuild that persons faith in the messed up world we live in. A world where we would rather type our hearts out to complete strangers than engage them in one to one conversation!
We are social animals people and a kind word can mean the world to the lonely, try it, you may start to wake up to what this world should be like?
