I got dressed for school slowly and carefully the next morning, but that was normal for me. I put on a red jumper, showing off my shoulder, a grey skirt, black tights, and red pumps. The skirt was quite short, but it didn’t matter- dad was at work. I checked I had my wallet, books, and toast, then ran out the front door to catch the school bus.
The first subject I had at school on Thursday was Spanish. I was late, so I rushed into class saying, “Lamento llegar tarde te peirdas,” and hurried over to the only spare seat available. I heard a giggle and resumed Jessica had gotten a text from her boyfriend or something. Sure enough, a few seconds later, a note was passed down to me saying ‘Raine, Matt just sent me a text! It said xx! What do you think that means?? Xx I love you, like as in kisses? Or xx- We’re over, you’re my ex?’
This was ridiculous! For crying lout loud, She was sitting NEXT to him! I turned around to roll my eyes at her when I noticed the boy sitting next to me. The tough new one, with dark brown hair jelled untidily off his face, a foreign looking tan, and kind of intimidating muscles. He was staring at me. I blushed and looked down at my desk, but he kept on looking. The weirdest thing was, he wasn’t looking at my work, or short skirt, He was looking at ME- At my face! With something that looked suspiciously like interest . I wondered if he had a girlfriend? He obviously wasn’t dating anyone at Bronte High- I would know if he was. But he might have a girlfriend back in Leeds, or wherever he was from.
In the distance, I heard someone say rain. I dint look up, because chances were, they were talking about the weather.
“Raine- Raine!” Ok, whoever it was was defiantly talking to me. I lokked up to see the teacher looking at me expectantly, waiting for an answer.
“Feminine,” The new guy whispered to me.
“Feminino, que termina con una ah.” I answered to the teacher. She nodded, and returned to the board. “Thanks.” I whispered to the new guy.
“Any time Raine” I frowned for a moment and asked,
“How do you know my name?”
“Well, firstly, It’s a tiny school, and you and your group of friends seem to be at the very centre of it all, And secondly, the teacher just called your name three times.” I rolled my eyes. He didn’t have to point that out.
“So what’s your name?”
“Jason,” he said, and reached out to shake my hand.
“Nice to meet you.” I said. Our shoulders brushed as he reached out to shake my hand.
Jason walked me to my next class- after comparing our timetables we discovered we had all the same classes on Thursdays and Mondays. I guess he was right when he said it was a small school! As we walked between classes, he asked me lots of questions- Friends, family, favourite things, etc. He told me a bit about himself too. He moved here from Leads a few weeks ago, to a small house a bit further away form school than mine. He didn’t see much of his parents because they commuted to Leads, they had moved here because they decided that Jason needed more fresh air from the country. He didn’t mind much, Most of his friends had moved various places such as Scotland or London… And he dint have a girlfriend.
We sat next to each other in every class, but not lunch. He sat with his friends in the Rugby team, while I sat with the girls in our usual spot in the centre of the room.
“Hello Raine…” Too formal- suspicious.
“Hey April, Jess, Bex.” I greeted them.
“Tiffany’s sick today.” Bex told me.
“I noticed.” Silence.
“So… Err, you know that boy… Who is he? What’s he like? Are you two dating?” April gushed. “Because, you know, he’s on a sports team, so as long as he’s not gay, we’re perfectly happy with you two dating.” She added. I hesitated before answering.
“Well… The thing is, I only just met him today, so it would be kind of weird if we were, but he’s really hot. And nice. Not exactly sweet, but very funny. So honestly, I wouldn’t mind if we were.”
“OH. MY.GOD.” Aprils jaw dropped.
“Oh my gosh!” Squealed Bex.
“Wow! I cant believe it!” Came Jessica’s voice from next to me. Tiffany is going to be really jealous. She baggsed him.”
I looked around to see where Jason was, and saw that he waiting for me by the door. I scooped up my lunch and walked over to join him, only pausing to turn around and say, “By the way, his name is Jason.”
The rest of the day passed in a blur. I found myself feeling perfectly comfortable telling Jason every little detail about my life, probably because he seemed so interested in all I had to say. And, the weirdest thing was, the more I talked to him, the more I wanted to tell him, the less I wanted school to end and for him to leave. I’d never felt this way about anyone before- sure, I’d had boyfriends and stuff, but this was different, and he wasn’t my boyfriend either, I ‘d met his exactly 6 hours ago! It turned out he was thinking along the same lines as me.
The bell rang at 3:30, same as usual. We walked out of class together, discussing the test we’d just had. As we reached the bus stop, he reached out and took my hand. My heart thudded erratically, but luckily I dint blush. Jason looked down to smile at me, before realising what he’d done. He snatched his hand away from me, paused for a moment, and walked away without looking back.
