I've browsed through the cards
Time after time
Read all the words posted
Heartfelt in rhyme
At times I've been choked
My eyes stung by tears
As so many describe
Happy growing up years
They express such deep love
An unwavering affection
For the man in their lives
Who never asked for perfection
The one who made you feel safe
Who no matter what, he was there
Who picked you up when you fell
Into depths of despair
A stalwart, a pole star
Your unrelenting light
The one who said 'you'd go far'
And believed you just might...
And for just a brief moment
I'm envious and sad
Wondering how it would be
To have what you've had
Would things have been different?
With a decent father figure
Would my problems have been tempered
Instead of just getting bigger?
And then I shake myself
Buck up, and arse kick self pity
So what if my dad
Is useless and shitty?
I got through it! I survived!
Against the odds I came good
I ain't the only one who's life
Didn't go as it should
And though today really doesn't
Mean that much to me
Thanks for sharing your stories
They're truly beautiful to see..
