A Sad Day

How sad it is, that top of the day
Is a mismatched 'quote' about cutting
This is not the only way!

When I read it in the wee small hours,
It brought a tear to my eye,
That one so young,
Thought this is the answer, not reaching for the sky.

What I find more upsetting,
Is the level of likes,
Is this a positive message,
To carve oneself, with a painted spike.

I'm sorry Opuss, but I think this may not be the place for me,
For it should not be romanticised, plagiarised, and left for all to see.

Well said πŸ‘πŸ‘

I would guess the poster has never cut and is jumping on a cynical band wagon to be popular... It's just another random quote to get vapid likes.. Most cutting posts make me itch, but this is just garbage.. Plus a fair % of the likes come from her own other accounts..

I'm feeling the same Ed, especially as the app owners seem happy to let it go on if it brings more members through the door. If things don't improve I'm out of here too.

It brought a tear to my eye too when I read it in the early hours...but don't let it dishearten you hun there is too much great stuff on here to read and enjoy besides you can't leave we'd miss too much 😊

πŸ‘€? Why is it every time I join something so neat and made new friends, everyone leaving? :( and who's account? -.-

@Irrational_Kimmi I don't think the app owners are pleased about it, because it brings new members through the door. It doesn't give them anything, the app costs them to maintain it, they earn nothing. I will be sorry to see you leave, it's a good bunch of people, I have been very glad to meet! πŸ™

I would be very sad to see you go @eddie12309 I have a lot of respect for you and would miss your voice of reason, this is very sad! πŸ™

Never mind I caught up, I agree with you all

@Burrfoot your voice of reason is music to my ears, well done! ☺😽

@crowncottage I don't know, I think they plan to make money in the long run so for them more users is better. Quantity over quality wins out, apparently.

@Irrational_Kimmi I know for a fact that it isn't the case. All the maintenance and cost of Opuss is at the expense of something else. Of course it would be great to make money from it, but it isn't. I just hope the aggravation doesn't make them pull the plug, it must be tempting sometimes!

got to agree with @crowncottage I've spoken to the owners and they are genuine guys.. Just reg joes that have come up with a great idea.. But have risked everything to get it going and continue to sink everything into it at the expense of more than just money! At the end of the day it's just a silly girl playing silly popularity games and I'm sure they will act when they get the chance.

@Burrfoot thank you for that, it's totally true! ☺😽

@Burrfoot @crowncottage well I'm glad to hear that, it gives me hope for this app. I've had an email from Adam Neilson too so hopefully things will get sorted. I forget sometimes that it's a massive job to take care of Opuss

@Irrational_Kimmi especially when it's not your only job! πŸ˜‰

@chickgamer @Burrfoot @Irrational_Kimmi @sjw @insomnium @crowncottage apologies for the forthcoming long comment. I wrote this as the post deeply upset me as firstly I think it lowers the integrity the spirit of Opuss, I don't find the top post 'beautiful words'. I feel it is an advert/ promotion for a practice that is not healthy for body or mind. Without being patronising, young teenagers whether we like it are not are impressionable. We have often discussed on here the influence of the media on body image. We wouldn't expect to see an anorexic girl on the cover of a popular magazine with title Top Teen. I feel that the sensible ones out there will scroll on by, but there may one young person looking at this app who is on the edge for whatever reason sees this 'quote' as top, see it as popular, the 'thing' to do and follow suit. I am absolutely for freedom of speech, our parents, grandparents etc fought and died so we could live in a democracy. But... Surely we should not be promoting such an activity whether plagiarised or not. Or am I wrong?πŸ˜”

@eddie12309 you are completely right. This post indeed glamorises what can be a serious and life-threatening problem.

@eddie12309 I agree. Yes we can discuss it and raise awareness as to high to deal with it and overcome the issues causing you to self harm but that doesn't mean we're promoting it as the in thing. Teenagers are impressionable and constantly want to be with the "in thing".

@eddie12309 completely agree with you there! I've fallen out repeatedly with ppl posting romanticised versions of self harm. It sickens me and I will keep on questioning it when I read them. Self harmers need help, self harming needs scorn.. Two separate issues in my view

@eddie12309 no you are not wrong. You did the right thing when you wrote your post about your reaction to a difficult childhood. You have to lead by example, which you do. The reaction and comments to those depressing posts send a positive message. It won't be possible for censorship, or I doubt it. I would sooner the posts were commented on by sensible adults than to be ignored and left to thrive. I so rarely check who is top, I am not aware of the 'likes' being important, the depressing theme is though!

@Burrfoot hehe we've had words over this issue before πŸ˜‰ and that's the crux - kids asking for help through poetry or discussing this sensitive issue for what it is (a problem, not a solution) is, IMO, very different to this kind of post. That a person would use such an issue as a vehicle to get more likes from impressionable teens is just abhorrent.

No your right in what you say teenagers are often desperate to fit in even if they don't have real issues and could so easily think about giving it a go, but at the same time how does opuss deal with it should they start censorship and if so where do they draw the line?

You are spot on. Apart from all the above comments, on a base level it creates bad feeling among the people who use Opuss to actually write. And there's a question of multiple account abuse here too I understand. I like to say live and let live, and for the most part I scroll on by, but these posts actually make me mad. Look at me look at me, posting about cutting for popularity. Utter rubbish. I'm on your side Ed. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@sjw I agree!

@Irrational_Kimmi @sjw @crowncottage @Burrfoot @chickgamer I have just read the comments above and must say I totally agree with you, self harming is not something we should support and like one of you said, they are not 'beautiful words'. Being a teenager myself i can understand what goes through many heads, 'is my writing good enough?' 'Should I post things that aren't really my problem?' Etc... As a community I think that we should make sure that posts like these aren't that 'big' and for everyone to be aware to be themselves and not like others. πŸ˜˜β€πŸ‘

@LittleKitten yes we should! 😽

Please don't go. Your work is part of what makes Opuss beautiful words. Please don't go.

@nikujagagirl I agree, I hope @eddie12309 does not leave opuss. πŸ‘β€

@Irrational_Kimmi @chickgamer @Burrfoot @crowncottage @sjw @leelee101 thank you. I'm glad you agree. I've been feeling quite down about this all day. Strange how a complete anonymous can affect you this way. But thank you for the support. I'm glad now to see its been removed. I've worked with young teens with 'issues' so I know how easy something as little as this could so easily snowball. Sienna and Linda- your right- censorship is a delicate issue. 😘 To all'

@LittleKitten your comment has really made me smile. Wise words, we should do what we can to unglamorise these posts. πŸ˜˜πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@nikujagagirl @LittleKitten I'm not leaving, but I had to question why I was writing on an app that promoted something I so strongly disagree with. πŸ˜”

Wheyhey.. Yet again balance has been restored πŸ‘

@eddie12309 I'm glad you're staying. That post upset me greatly as well. It seems the young people are cutting a lot lately. It's so horrible.

@eddie12309 I'm glad I made you smile on 'a sad day.' 😊

@eddie12309 hopefully all over now. I see her other piece has gone as well, not overly necessary but I hope a lesson has been learnt here today. Peace descend please ❀❀❀

I saw the quote and was horrified by it. I am a young girl who wants to be inspired by other people's poems and stories, not by horrific posts like that. I believe that a lot of posts about self-harming have been over the recent death of Amanda Todd. The video she made was posted all over the web and since then there have been many more videos of teenagers who are self-harming. I thought this was... Well I can't call it good because you shouldn't have to write this... But sends a strong message out to people. Sorry this comment turned out much longer than expected.

Stop.all of you

I deleted it because of all you

@dreamcatchers you should understand from reading the comments above that many not just myself were upset by the quote you used.

@sian_ πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@sian_ it's great to hear from sensible, intelligent young people like you. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@eddie12309 I personally find it quite sad the community has reacted in this way to a young person who is going through a tough time (think back to when you were that age and remember that difficult transition between child and adult hood) Expression of feelings is an awkward thing for some and if @dreamcatchers related to this quote and felt it worthy of sharing then all power to her I say. She didn't claim it was her words. She didn't vote it to the top through duplicate accounts (I closed all of those). So someone out there agrees with her that the poem is notable and the fact it's one of the top of the day today is just one of those things we all have to accept as it was some of us that put it there.

@Seamonster I am not responsible for how the community has reacted. I had no idea of her multiple accounts etc. I wrote this from the heart. I remember all too well my teenage years- in fact I wrote a piece about it the other day. If you have read it then maybe you will understand. I have worked with girls who have cut, I am not under any illusion of its impact on the child, family or friends. I had no idea the amount of posts relating to her copying and cheating. I'm flabbergasted that you think 'all power to her' yes its probably more impressionable young people liking it. I have children and I know you have too, how would you feel if your child when old enough read this quote and thought oh that must be popular, its cool to cut. In sorry Im lost for words πŸ˜” I am one of the few that have left her an encouraging comment.

@Seamonster oh dear, I have to disagree. People did try to help and she basically said 'get lost'. As a teenager that used to cut I have defended posts that actually address the issues - this one was glamorising. If she hasn't reacted so negatively it would have been a different story. And surely @eddie12309 is as entitled to her opinion on the matter as any other user?

@eddie12309 my apologies. I wasn't trying to single you out. I've been trying to stay impartial as ever. When i say All power to her I'm saying it's her life. Not mine nor anyone else's here. You ask about what if it were one of my children? I'd be horrified of course but I'd be hopeful that they could articulate or at least seek dialogue with responsible adults who would try to help and make sense of the world. I'm being neive perhaps but there you go.

@Irrational_Kimmi well then, I stand corrected. I shall bow out of the fray and stick to keeping the engine ticking over. But I will say that I and the rest of the small team want and have always wanted to promote a supporting and non-judgemental community. There are some things I read that I detest but the same could be said of music or wandering around a gallery. One mans port is another mans poison.

@Seamonster apology accepted. Of course you have a difficult job here, no one is disputing that. Yes you hit the nail on the head twice, its HER life, the words I don't think she understood the power they have and effect, and you would be horrified... Just as I was when I saw it this morning. And sadly I do think you are being naive, but I will continue to support and encourage all on this app.

@Seamonster we all try to support diversity - this community has been so supportive to me over the past year. I literally do not know what I would do without Opuss. I'm pretty sure all that had happened today had been because the users love and want to protect this community. Indeed, there are things that are posted that I do not like or agree with; I just don't read them. But when I see the app being misused and members being treated rudely, I get defensive. You know I'm the first to email support when things go bad. I want this app to grow, but in a good, original way, not to become a twitter or Tumblr clone. Anyway, I think this should be put to bed, we've all had our day, as is our prerogative. 😌

Wow my fingers hurt.

*our say. I was typing fast

@Seamonster also you need to change the author picks... They've been like that since summer. Lol. 😊

Wow! That's all too much to read, but I agree with y'all there, but some teen post that are sensitive, they only could post from their deepest feeling, but this account I saw, she didn't credit, even MANY friends of mine on facebook and twitters know well enough to credit the original owner of quote, poem, or whatever. ALWAYS AND NO MATTER WHAT. Not putting up a credit is like saying you own them without really saying it... Just saying, ah oh about those 'cutters' I was and still am one of those girls, it's not 'fad' things, it's serious, and addictive. I know it cause I went through it, but I have someone special in my life that is helping me to go through it, I'm trying to stop. But the scars inside cut really deep, deeper than any of you could ever imagine, the hole in my heart... So i think who ever post about that, expressing their feeling are brave, of course only if it's not about encouraging other to do it πŸ’”β€

@eddie12309 I know I know I know. I'm actually trying to work out a way that you lot can choose but still at the same time keep it slightly random. I'll send out an Opuss with an outline to garner some feedback.

(But zzzzzz first)

@Seamonster I want to put it to bed, but she got a large portion of her likes just after the 1am (ish) switchover, I was watching go up and up in front of my eyes. She knew exactly what she was doing and how to manipulate the app. A point proved by your having to close down her multiple accounts. Eddies sad about the content of the quote she decided to thieve off tumblr. Rightly so, it was an awful quote to think of as 'being cool'. The rest of us just didn't like our good advice being spat back at us. It's a shame she just didn't come on board and play nice. Anyway all done now and I think you should be rather happy with the people who quite clearly have the best interests of your most excellent app at heart. Adam we just love it, and I think it shows. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

@eddie12309 agreed. They've got dust on 'em! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@Seamonster I have to agree with you on some points. A few of the comments that I read were detestable and not what I expected from regulars. Not to mention all the posts that followed, no longer mocking her, but mocking the concept of cutting with disgusting humour. I understand the animosity, but to go about it in such a childish manner is deplorable. Quite disappointed by the community today.

@Jamtots I had no idea all the other stuff was going on until I got home tonight. I was just saddened by the contents popularity. πŸ˜”

@Jamtots hmm either I'm paranoid or you refer to my #getagrip posts (I can't think of any other humour posts about it, but I could be wrong) I firmly believe humour and satire are the best way to parody the obscene in all walks of life. My posts did not mock self harm, they parodied a post glamourising it.. If its not me you refer to i apologise, ignore me

@eddie12309 Ah, forget it. I deleted my comment. C'est la vie, and all that.

@Burrfoot wasn't you. I think I gave a few of yours some likes? There were others that I didn't like, not going to name anyone.

@Jamtots yeah its been a mad day.. A few comments made me wince.. But hopefully it's blown over.. Until the next kuffufle

@Burrfoot @eddie12309 @leelee101 @Seamonster well I thought this was over but 'Ashley' has tracked me down on Instagram to be abusive towards me. Just thought I'd highlight this.

@Irrational_Kimmi to be honest I've saved what she said Kim in case she deletes her comment.

@Irrational_Kimmi I accidentally joined instawotsit thinking it was a camera app .. Can you block ppl on it? Ps.. I see the latest post hasn't got the mandatory 50 likes without the multi accounts

@Burrfoot yeah I'm going to block her 😊

@Irrational_Kimmi @Burrfoot I've been thinking about this and it just proves the point I made that the words she posted are daggers in the hands of the irresponsible. Now I need to get back to work. πŸ˜”πŸ˜˜

@Burrfoot is it not a camera app? I don't really know that much about it.

@leelee101 I thought it was an app to post photos. I'm quite precious with my photography that's why I've never downloaded it. But I have mates who use it. But I find their photos to be dull TBH. 😏

That sounded awful. πŸ‘†πŸ‘†

@eddie12309 πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Tell it like it is hun! Is it more another social site then?

@leelee101 I do t really know, I only see what photos they post on Instagram on my Facebook page. Lots of sunsets and cat pictures πŸ˜‚

@eddie12309 hmm. I think I'll leave it. πŸ˜‚

@leelee101 maybe, ask someone who actually uses it like Kim. Right time for bed. Night. πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

@leelee101 was one of the first apps I downloaded when I got my ithingy, thinking it was just for doing effects to pics, then realised the social media bit of it so deleted it. I like anonymity and hate looking at other ppls holiday pics.. Not the place for me πŸ˜‰
