Sleep now old friend, your gentle heart is still.
Sleep and dream of calmer places,
Sadder faces who loved you more
Are left behind.
Tired now, bouncing youth has gone,
And a smaller world moves on.
A blanketed bed is cold and empty
For lack of you.
Warm memories tug at a broken heart
And there are easier times to come.
The rugs are cold, where once, you kept them warm
With your sun baked sleep
And your watchful keep of a garden,
Now empty of your toys.
A kitchen floor forever clean,
No muddy paws to grumble on.
Warm to touch, your zealous greetings gone.
An empty house welcomes home a heavy heart.
