Chapter 3
The Grandparents
I sit in my room reading. Chandler gave me a lovely book. It's call Romeo and Juliet. He said it was a book for girls, so he gave it to me. So far I have fallen in love with the story of the star crossed lovers. The book has given me peace, and sometimes let's me forget about my tragedies. I continue to read, but my story is interrupted. " They're here!" I hear Garrett shout. My eyes widen, and I roll my wheel chair quickly to my bedroom window. I stare at the drive way, and see an unfamiliar car. Out of the car steps two unfamiliar people, but I know who they are. Their grandparents have arrived. My heart sinks. I've never been good at first impressions. I hear the front door open, and the joyous voices of a happy family. The voices that died in me long ago. "It's great to see you all," says their grandmother, "but don't you have one more child now?" "Oh yes we do." says Mrs. Green. "You're gonna love her grandma." I hear Chandler say. "Claire, come on out! There's some one I want you to meet!" Mrs. Green yells. I roll out of my room. I'm shaking like a chihuahua in the snow. I stop at the entrance to the living room, and peek my head around. "Yes" I say softly. I look at the grandparents, and see them smiling. "Claire these are my parents." says Mrs. Green. "Come in we won't bite." says the grandma. I roll into the room. As soon as the rest of me is visible I hear her scream. I stop, and look up. I then realize she shrieked at the sight of me. " Whats wrong with her!" shouts the grandma. My heart breaks, because now I understand. She didn't know I was crippled.
