I stood under the delicate archway of bracken, the mockingkays tweeting contentley from their high perch in the trees. The sweet breeze carefully caressing my tangled mop of auburn hair. Blowing it gentley into my pale skin.
"Kristen?" my father enquired, "are you ready?" i turn and nod. Taking a deep breath and proceeding under the archway and through the vast door into the church. Placing my restless body onto the hard wooden bench amongst sorrowfull family members was something i was used to doing. There were always people dying in my family, longlost cousins, step-half-twice removed nieces or nephews. The sister of our aunties uncle, or whoever came next. It seems selfish of me but one can not forgive a child of 12 for not liking funerals.
I was pretty oblivious to who had actually died this time, see me, dad, Jesse, Marco and Lily and mum never really know them. Well we only know their names through 4 hours on ancestery! And thats only so we can right on that little plastic tag that comes with the flowers... RIP Bob or Julie or whatever. Me and Lil didnt really think there was any point in gettig flowers seeing as the dead guy was never going to see them but Mum and dad insisited we paid our respects.
After the tedious ceremony was over, Me and the others were becoming restless so whilst my parents were indulging at the finger buffet, we headed off into thr nearby woods.
Gosh, i havent even introduced them yet! Stop! I musnt continue until ive told you about them, they're family afterall.
First the youngest- Marco- a right pain, 9 years old and personally i think he is a stubborn baby brat, thats mine and Lil's name for him. Then Me, unfortunatley- piggy in the middle! I've always wished it was just me and Lily- twins we'd be. It'd be so much better.
Then my Lily, she was 16, 4 years older than me, but she was like a bezzie mate, sister and mum all rolled into her. I know everyone says that your not supposed to have a favoutite family member- but mine is definitley her. I love the way her sweet, soft voice sing me to sleep over the thunderstorms or the arguing. She means so much to me.
Finally Jesse, he's 17 and is a real player- dosent leave cause he can't land a job anywhere. You can totally tell that mum and dad are bursting to get rid of him though cause he produces so much clutter and smell to drive any sane person to a mental state of mind.
Anyway lets get back onto the subject. We headed off into the woods, my patent black leather shoes dusting up amongst the twigs and leaves cracking beneth our feet. The shelter lay ahead, a mess of ivy entwined branches and bracken heaped together in a fort form. We all clambered inside. Out little tradition. 6 years and no matter how old we all were we would still come.
"Kristen send a text to Mum saying were ok!" said Jesse
"Why me?" I groaned
"Just coz" continued Lily.
I held back the tears as a sharp pain built up behind my eyes
"You too?" i turned away so thy couldnt see.
Lily put her arms around me and patted my back when she saw i had willingly sent '@ the fort and safe, CU in an hr' to Mum.
As evening fell we headed back to the dusky clearing and into the car. Resting my head on the soft headrest i dozed off, closing my weary
eyes.
RINNNNNGG RINNNNGG
Groaning, i rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and turned of the alarm. The neon numbers reading 7:45... Oops i had 15 minuites until i was officially supposed to have registered in school.
However 15 minuites later i was sitting slumped in the bus shelter watching Lily flirt and gossp. It felt like she was growing apart from me into her own little world of boys and bezzies. Biting my lip nervously released the bittersweet taste of blood into my mouth. I shuddered and took several gulps of Juice before hopping onto the bus that had just pulled up.
An hour passed and i was sitting i algebra, listening on Macey's and Laura's bitchy gossip from across the desk.
"Yeah, i know Laura!" whispered Macey, "isn't she a freak!"
"Yeah and have you seen her sister- she is a right slut, replied Laura in a hushed tone.
"eew, i know" remarked Macey with a stiffled giggle.
"What are you girls, oohing about " asked Mrs Lantarley our algebra teacher, that shut them up.
I'd get them after school. How dare they talk about me and Lily like that!
The school bell finally rung- signifying the end of the day! Pulling my backpack over my left shoulder i sett off to the bike sheds. Pulling my Blackberry out my blazer pocket i BBM'ed Macey.
'Can u meet me behind bike sheds. Bring Laura.'
Bing!
'Dream on Kristen i av betta fings 2 do then waste ma time wid yer stupid games!'
Grr she annoyed me.
Heding for the green gates, crusted in green moulding paint from years of children scratching and picking and kicking it away.
And then i heard a sharp, sneering voice. Macey Sharma Jones
" Kristeeeeen!" she trilled in her, snoty, patronising tone....
End of part one
