"You guys were walking awfully fast." Gavin said nonchalantly, putting his arm around Lydia's shoulder.
Lydia suddenly felt very uncomfortable. She shrugged his arm off, turning her head so he couldn't see his face. Like he could anyway, in this darkness.
Gavin grew quiet.
"Lydia?" he asked quietly, the hurt evident in his voice.
"What?" Lydia asked, pretending like she didn't realize what she'd done.
"Umm..nothing.." Gavin sighed, shutting up.
"Okay." Lydia muttered.
"Gavin! Wait up!" Natalie yelled, running over to him. "You're supposed to be walking beside me, remember?" she giggled.
"Oh, yeah, uh, I guess I thought we switched already...Sorry." Gavin mumbled, falling in step with her behind Lydia and Stefan.
"So..that kiss.." Stefan said, reaching for Lydia's hand.
Lydia grabbed it, her hand clammy.
"Can we not talk about it?" she asked quickly, embarrassed.
"Oh..uh, yeah, sure." Stefan mumbled. "Hey look! I think there's something up there."
"Huh?" Lydia said, looking up.
"THERE'S SOMETHING UP THERE!" Stefan yelled to the others.
"Switch off then!" Tashie yelled back. "Natalie and Stefan, Gavin and I, then Lydia and Marcus in back!" she commanded. Everyone switched positions.
"How far away is the exit, you think?" Lydia asked Marcus.
"A mile, two." Marcus said quietly.
"Oh, that's not too far." Lydia said excitedly.
"Uh-huh." Marcus said.
"So..why are you here?" Lydia said. Marcus was making her nervous.
"It doesn't matter." Marcus said matter-of-factly. "We're all here. We're all alive. What matters is if we're going to get out alive. Before your friend Gavin starts to not be able to walk. Before he realizes you kissed Stefan. Before he dies."
