---------------------------------

Some of us turn off the lights and we live
In the moonlight shooting by
Some of us scare ourselves to death in the dark
To be where the angels fly
Pretty maids all in a row lined up
Outside my cabin door
I've never wanted any of them wanting me
'cept the girl from the red river shore
Well I sat by her side and for awhile I tried
To make that girl my wife
She gave me her best advice and she said
"Go home and lead a quiet life"
Well I've been to the east and I've been to the west
And I've been out where the black winds roar
Somehow though I never did get that far
With the girl from the red river shore
Well I knew when I first laid eyes on her
I could never be free
One look at her and I knew right away
She should always be with me
Well the dream dried up a long time ago
Don't know where it is anymore
True to life, true to me
Was the girl from the red river shore
Well I'm wearing the cloak of misery
And I've tasted jilted love
And the frozen smile upon my face
Fits me like a glove
Well I can't escape from the memory
Of the one that I'll always adore
All those nights when I lay in the arms
Of the girl from the red river shore
Well we're living in the shadows of a fading past
Trapped in the fires of time
I've tried not to ever hurt anybody
And to stay out of the life of crime
And when it's all been said and done
I never did know the score
One more day is another day away
From the girl from the red river shore
Well I'm a stranger here in a strange land
But I know this is where I belong
I ramble and gamble for the one I love
And the hills will give me a song
Though nothing looks familiar to me
I know I've stayed here before
Once a thousand nights ago
With the girl from the red river shore
Well I went back to see about her once
Went back to straighten it out
Everybody that I talked to had seen us there
Said they didn't know who I was talking about
Well the sun went down on me a long time ago
I've had to pull back from the door
I wish I could've spent every hour of my life
With the girl from the red river shore
Now I've heard about a guy who lived a long time ago
A man full of sorrow and strife
That if someone around him died and was dead
He knew how to bring him on back to life
Well I don't know what kind of language he used
Or if they do that kind of thing anymore
Sometimes I think nobody ever saw me here at all
'Cept the girl from the red river shore

Man, that's excellent. That's it, just great mate. Well done sir. 👏👍😊

Amazing lyrics ain't they mate! They are not mine tho (wish they were lol) it's all Bob Dylan's lyrics but thought I'd share for those who don't know or have not listened to Bob Dylan 👍

Quality mate have you heard 'Donavon' not Jason lol his music sounds the same as Dylan 'colours' is a good one of his

@glen I've not mate, altho he has been recommended to me, will check him out tho 😉👍

@smellyfingers well worth a listen mate, there's a video on YouTube of Dylan and Donavon playing in a room together, awesome stuff.

@glen cool, I'll check it out (is colours an album?) have you seen the YouTube clip of jim Morrison and van Morrison duet? Pretty cool 👍

AMAZING🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

@smellyfingers they are great. I got my posts mixed up mate, sure I read this was a piece inspired by etc etc. still great stuff tho. Off I go to iTunes methinks! 😊😊

And you appear to have grown some eyes...! 👀😳😊

The final reveal! Lovely😘 And as for Dylan? Well we can only dream. The man is a genius. Do you like Cohen? Not always as pleasing to listen to vocally, but written some astounding pieces too. 😌😘😘

@misslittleDHP yeah Dylan is a true genius and very inspiring 👍

@leelee101 hahaha no worries, just thought I'd point it out what with the recent plagiarism fiascos 👍

@Fly10 hahaha thank you babe ☺ yeah I know he phenomenal lyracist and has covered quite a few genres/styles over the many years, the music isn't to everyone's taste but his words, wow! Not heard any Cohen hun, recommend me an album?

Great lyrics 💞

Probably several, & like Dylan, his subject matter is so diverse. Have a look at lyrics from something simple, like 'Chelsea Hotel' and then compare to beautiful 'Suzanne' and finally the spot on messages in later piece such as 'The Future'. I'd suggest reading lyrics first as poetry, then have a listen to the tracks. His voice, I admit, is like Marmite-but then so is Dylan! Let me know what you think (shan't be offended if not your thing😉) 😘😘

Big Dylan fan. Grew up on it. He's an amazing talent. Saw him couple years ago. His band is so tight but the ol vocal chords sound worse for the wear. 💐

@Fly10 yeah just read them lyrics and "the Future" is awesome poetry and he obviously says it how it is (me likes) "give me crack and anal sex, take the only tree that's left, and stuff it up the hole, in your culture" 😂😂😳 and this from Suzanne: "And Jesus was a sailor, when he walked upon the water, And he spent a long time watching, from his lonely wooden tower" love it but kinda make my stuff suck and feels like i'm a minnow in the sea Lmfao 😱😘

@ckahn I have only been listening to him for a few months and wow what an inspiration (I could write about 20 poems from just this one song of his I posted) I drive past a well known venue in Kent yesterday and he headlining a festival there this weekend, gutted as I didn't know and would LOVE to see him live 😏😔

@ckahn @smellyfingers I agree his vocals are on the more dodgy side of 'raw' now! I was brought up on him too (one of the few good things my dad did provide!) and have seen him a couple of times over the years. Richard, there are so many astounding pieces of him I could recommend, but prob best a journey you take alone, as v.personal as to what each individual reads into lyrics. And re doubting your own stuff-don't! These guys all started off somewhere, & there's some debate as to where Dylan for instance, procured his early lyrics (a lot of similarities to others apparently). I view them all as inspiration & the more you listen, the more you can push the boundaries of your own work. And ironically the lines you've quoted from Cohen? Exact same ones that stand out for me (especially stuff it up the hole in your culture-genius 😉) Enjoy the lyrical journey! 😘😘

I prefer his very early stuff- blood on the tracks. That era. Did you know Jacob Dylan from the Wallflowers is his son?

@Fly10 @ckahn I do have about 4/5 of Dylan's albums but prefer this album mentioned in this post and prefer the gravelly old bluesy voice, altho some of the earlier stuff is amazing. Are you both familiar with this album? All the songs are demo/variations on the versions released and don't sound anything like the released versions (better IMO). I have written some Dylan-esque type lyrics/poems (do a search for "the wax man") I actually got a comment saying its bob Dylan-ish which is amazing for me considering I have only been writing for I think 5 months now and to have 200+ posts is just crazy (I would have laughed a year ago if someone told me all this would happen lol) crazy stuff. 😘

@ckahn @smellyfingers Blood On The Tracks is my favourite album too (closely followed by Blonde On Blonde) & my I think I'd have to choose Tangled Up In Blue as the track which I'm drawn to everytime...it's astonishing. There are many others on that album that are sheer brilliance too. Rich, check out lyrics for them all, & for sheer fun Lily, Rosemary & Jack of Hearts. I'm halfway through a piece inspired by both that & my lifelong guilty crush on Paul Newman. All Wild West fun, but only halfway thru it & ending not yet come together. Will also check out album you've mentioned as not overly familiar with it. Love these discussions don't you guys?😘😘

@ckahn No, didn't realise that! I knew Leonard Cohens daughter had kid with Rufus Wainwright...I wonder whether that will produce future prodigy?!x

@smellyfingers I was a fan of Bob Dylan when I was a teenager, he has been around for a long time! I still think he is amazing, after about 40 years! 😻

@smellyfingers got my sums wrong, I have listened to him for a lot more than 40 years! 😱😹😹

@smellyfingers @Fly10 they say that Dylan was the first rap artist with his piece subterranean homesick blues 😉
