Of my used-to-be home
All has burned
All the mem'ries come
Where we used to play
Barbies and tic-tac-toe
Telling little secrets
Nobody'll ever know
Our once-upon-a-time's
Are now ashes on the ground
I walk alone this dead house
Roaming aimlessly around
Grey and black
That's all that remains
And our old mem'ries
As much as it pains
We played and laughed here
That's all that we knew
And not to touch anything
Until Momma approved
Gliding to our old front lawn
I see a small shine
Stop in my tracks
Something survived?
I step a little closer
To get a better look
A tarnished door handle
The one thing the fire never took
Wielded by our grandfather
As a wedding proposal
Since he couldn't make rings
He chose something they'd both hold
A tarnished door handle
That's all you see
But for all it's gone through
It inspires hope, deep within me.
