Jason walked through the door, as calm and cool as ever, and I took a breath.
I held a Hershey's chocolate kiss in my hands, and tossed it back and forth, one hand to the other.
Mr. Andrews wasn't here today, so we had to direct ourselves in our rehearsal.
I didn't want the kiss, I really didn't. I wasn't in the mood for chocolate, and I planned on giving it to Jason...but how?
It would be weird to just give it to him. I had to do something funny...something to make him smile.
I wondered if I'd even have the chance to talk to him.
"We're doing Nelly Bly," Rose, our student instructor, said, reading from the sheet of Mr. Andrews' instructions. "And we're mixed, everybody, mix it up!"
And this was my chance!
I snatched up the kiss and grabbed Nelly Bly.
There was a bass behind me, so I walked over and stood next to him. Then, an alto shuffled over and slithered between us, and then another bass came to my other side.
"Crap," I thought. "Now Jason won't--"
"'Scuse me," Jason murmured, squeezing himself between me and the bass.
I looked at him, my face heating up.
"H-hey, Jason," I blurted, without even thinking. My hand, holding the red foil wrapped chocolate, jerked upwards. "Want a kiss?"
"WHAT!?!?!!?" my brain screamed.
Startled, he looked down at the piece of candy, and then smiled cooly.
"You're so sweet," he said softly, taking it and slipping it in his hoodie pocket.
What. Did. I. Just. Do.
Completely shocked and mortified at my behavior, I quickly turned away, my face flaming, and smiled at the alto next to me. We talked a bit, and then it was time to sing.
I couldn't even look at Jason as I sang. I was so embarrassed.
"'Want a kiss?'" I scolded myself. "Why don't you just write 'Hi I'm desperate Happy Valentine's Day' on your forehead?"
I didn't know if I could ever regain my casual, calm attitude with him.
It was time to go back to sections, so I left Jason without even saying anything. I didn't need to prove anything to him. He knew I wanted him. I could tell by the way he said "you're so sweet".
Then, to my surprise, Rose wanted us to mix again.
I went backwards, and very firmly told Lizzie to come stand next to me. I made very sure I was surrounded. The second row was getting crowded.
And then in squeezed Jason, smiling brightly at me.
"It's a bit tight," I commented, wondering why he was sticking around.
"It is," he agreed.
And, not leaving, he opened his music.

Writing is my life. Forever. I want to be an author when I grow up. I write all the time. When I'm happy, sad, angry...it's an escape. Oh, and I love green hearts. I absolutely love them.
